extra holes?

I was in woodcraft today getting some glue and noticed a new abrasive I have not seen.  It had extra holes what's the skinny? (for the ets150)

It's called Multi-Jetstream.  Available for 6" sanders only.  We are now beginning the transition to Multi-Jetstream and you can see what the new pad looks like in the FOG logo at the top of the page.  The "O" is the bottom of a Rotex 150 and shows the new pad.  The abrasives and pads are compatible with your existing sanders.  You can use the abrasives with your existing pads although the new replacements pads will be available soon. 

We will be providing additional information in the near future.  I believe there may have already been a thread on here about it though.

I have the new pad. The hard version for the Rotex. I haven't had too much opportunity yet to test it - I mean I have used the pad for some jobs, but mostly without the vac connected because I wasn't able to bring my CTL 22 with me. But on the limited occasions where I did use the vac I didn't notice any difference in dust collection compared to the older pad.

There is a new type of paper out, it's called Granat and it has more or less the same purpose as Brilliant2, mostly geared towards sanding painted surfaces, but with the difference that Granat is specifically designed for the newest VOC compliant paints. The VOC standard means the paint has less volatile components in it, ie less solvent and more solids. It's an environmental measure.

But it's not just Granat that has more holes in it. All other types of sandpaper will also be converted to the new Multi-Jetstream type. Here we can find it already in the stores.

Why is there an extra row of holes on the pad that's not on the paper?

Like I said, I don't profess to be an expert on it at this point.  I still need to be briefed on it.  However, it's my understanding that the 5" abrasives will not change.  The Multi-Jetstream only offers advantages with the 6" diameter.

The smaller holes supply additional air flow to the abrasives.  The effect of Jetsteam is enhanced with this newer version through 8 additional extraction holes and 16 additional air supply holes which improve air circulation.  Runs cooler, extracts better. 

Like I said, I will post more information soon.  Feel free to post questions but I may not answer additional questions until I have better information myself.

3M has recently introduced a new hole pattern, which you don't have to lineup with your pad.  It can be used with any hole configuration.
Greatest benefit is you don't have to try to align your paper, which isn't becoming any easier with the new pattern.
I've had a chance to test it a couple of months ago and it works, just toss it on your pad and sand away.  Especially when your chance grids often, like when finishing a small workpiece.

Dave, it's my understanding that the 5" pads would not benefit from the changes introduced by multi-Jetstream.  So, there are no plans for the 5" pads to see Multi-Jetstream.

I  have found the easy way for me to align the holes with the pad holes is to slightly curve the paper and start by aligning an outside, edge, hole and then rolling it onto the pad while aligning with the large center holes.  Fast and quite accurate when you have done it a few times...

My only question is if there will be a hole punch to punch existing paper into the new Multi-Jetstream format.  I know there's a punch for one of the sheet sanders.  While it would be tedious to do a 50 ct box in a sitting, I usually load up the sander systainer with 4-5 sheets of each grit and leave the rest in the assortment systainer.  Doing a couple sheets at a time wouldn't be horrible.

As a side point, the more holes that are in the paper, the less abrasive you have so the less dust you make.  That said, I get no dust whatsoever when I run the sander without an abrasive sheet on it.

Paul, there's no need to retrofit your existing abrasives.  The old abrasives work with the new pad, the new abrasives work with the old pad.  I guess the answer to the question is that there will be no hole punch made available.

People, you expect too much from the added holes. The effort of punching holes in your older paper would not be worth the benefit. Why is it always that when there's something 'new' available people immediately think the 'old' is all of a sudden no good anymore? The old pads and paper were already close to perfection. It's hard to improve on that. Maybe Festool saw some improvement in a lab environment, but I've been using this pad now for over 3 months in real life and I see NO improvement whatsoever. If there's an improvement, it's really only marginally, with an emphasis on 'very'.

To me this feels like the world records on the 100 meter dash. One runs it in 9.70 seconds, and the other guy in 9.69. The 9.69 guy is the champ all of a sudden and the 9.70 guy now sucks. While no man can really see the difference, only a computer can.

Please, don't worry about your older pads and paper, they're just fine.

Alex, the holes offering improved dust extraction is only part of the story.  The pads feature a new StickFix material which offers much better resistance to heat combined with the additional holes for improved air circulation which will improve pad life.  We are simpy committed to constant improvement of our products.
