Fantastic dust collection accessory for Festool Vacs

I bought a dust deputy yesterday because I had a little planing to do and knew from past experience how quickly that fills up my CT 22. Just finished using it today and I'm really impressed. I filled up a 42 gallon plastic contractor bag with chips and then I checked the vacuum bag and it was only 10 percent full!

The other great thing is the dust collection was so good using Makita's optional dust collecting attachment that there was literally only a handful of chips on the ground when I was done.

The dust deputy was well worth the $100.

ps I bought mine at Rockler, however, just now I saw on Oneida's web site that they have a pricier version ($250) designed specifically for Festool vacs.

Hey Erik,

I have the same planer and optional dust collection accessory as you.  The Festool Connector Sleeve is a little bigger on one end than the other, for some reason, and will work okay with that larger end inserted into that DC accessory -- still could use some adhesive caulk or whatever to fill the gap on the outer end and to ensure a good seal and keep it from coming apart, but the inner end fits snug enough.  Fitting a connector sleeve permanently to the end of your DC accessory will make the unit more plug-n-play.  

You might also want to get another pair of Rotating Hose Sleeves and make two shorter hoses out of that one you have so you can use a shorter hose between planer and cyclone.  If you do this, you might as well get yet another Connector Sleeve to connect these two shorter lengths together when desired.

I was at my local dealer a few days ago (also an Oneida dealer) and saw the new Festool happy version. Looks pretty nice...the box on top of the CT looks nice and heavy duty. A side note, the dealer had it marked as $229, FWIW.

Oneida added a feature that induces a slight negative pressure between a liner bag and the black systainer-looking box. It allows you to use regular garbage bags, which allows you to have a proper disposal process if you have potentially hazardous waste (lead paint, etc.). This addition caused production charges to increase as well as the sales price.

Contact Steve (Steve @Oneida Air Systems  [steve@oneida-air.co.uk]), they do have the Dust Deputy Ultimate for ?215 inc vat or there abouts, mind the newer system with the link between the hose and collection systainer to suck the waste bag is probably a little more

I just purchased this system a short while ago and in all probability will be returning it.  The negative pressure guizmo does not work well and the bag gets sucked up in th ecyclone on ocasion.  Second the top does not sit real tight against the base and there is a vacuum leak that pulls the bag back in.  I like the concept, but I think I'm going to return and get the steel version.  It does not sit on the CT33 like the other, but it will not have the issues mentioned above.  My inital review was positive (posted here), but after some use, I'm not so sure.

Just got an Ultimate Dust Deputy - Oneida had  a promotion where you get one free with a 2hp+ cyclone.

A few observations -

- is it just me, or is this thing somewhat Frankenstein-y and unwieldy ?  Sitting on top of my CT-33, with TWO hoses connecting the UDD and the CT (including the one generating negative suction on the bag), the big box on top, a third hose going to your tool, not to mention the CT power cord and the power cord for your tool, it seems very high and there seem to be a ton of  hoses protruding in the way - a lot.  Maybe there are no good ways to circumvent this, but it looks like a mess.

- the Oneida instructions were very clearly out of date.  I'm guessing they've gone through a bunch of rapid design revisions, so there were a couple of notes in there indicating what was wrong in the included manual, and some things (the bag gripper/negative suction gizmo) that weren't even mentioned at all.  I would have preferred that they just printed/xeroxed and dropped in a full set of complete, amended instructions instead of having to figure things out myself.

- it doesn't feel like my UDD really locks in very positively.

- I noticed that the lid on the UDD seems to collapse by a few cm at the higher suction levels.  Is this normal ? Elsewhere I have read this is indicative of a problem in a cyclone setup.

- I noticed that the UDD generates a high-pitched noise.  Anyone else find this ?

- I sure wish the UDD had some way to look inside it so I could tell how much stuff was in the bag.

- there's a warning to make sure there is no gap when installing the gasket between lid and container.  If it's so important, why couldn't they just install the gasket for us ?

I'm not sure if the benefits of using the UDD are going to outweigh the negatives - which to me are - added ungainliness and cluminess with introduction of extra hoses intruding into my working space, and loss of space on top of the CT vac.  I may just be happier changing out bags more often.  The added height makes the whole thing a lot less mobile - can't push it under the MFT anymore while working, for instance.

That's the conclusion I came to.  As I usually change out all my messy vac collection bags outside, I will opt to buy the reuseable bag long before I invite My Favourite Martian from Oneida over. [scared]
