I'm working on a total kitchen gut job of existing cabinets of a house I bought. Long story short, the house (and therefore the kitchen) is only 11 years old. House had roof damage, therefore water damage to kitchen, was REO/Bank Owned. So I'm tearing out water damage blue board and plaster, trim, insulation, cabinets, etc.

I'm trying to save the countertops (I plan on having the granite pulled by a local granite company), and was wondering if anybody has any advise on tools to remove the bond between the granite and the cabinets. I thought a scrapper blade for my Fein...it does gum up though. Thoughts? I know we have about a 50/50 chance or worse (haha) of savings these...I'd just like to spend the savings (if we have any) on better appliances, etc.

Thanks,
Shaun

I had a similar situation with a composite bathroom vanity top. I found if I used a wood/metal blade in the Fein and used the edge of the blade against the sealant with the blade up against the vanity top, it "cleaved" rather than cut and didn't gum up much. The sealant appeared to be silicone. YMMV.

Thanks, I'll take a look at that. I even thought piano wire or a abrasive wire (i.e. survival tree saw wire).

As a glazing contractor I remove silicone frequently.  Wipe your blade with acetone regularly and you will reduce the gumming.

i would just break the cab's and remove them by breaking the joint free.
Sawsall works great for demo of the cabs.
