Where has all the documentation and links that Forest created gone to?

Yes that's it but I thought it was topic and not hid within Festool tools. Thanks for locating it Matthew. Do you think it would be easier found by new users if it had it's own topic/header under Forum Technical. There's a tremendous amount of info in that thread.

Perhaps the link could be placed in multiple locations ? Festool Tools & Accessories , Other Tools & Accessories , Festool Jigs, Inventions, Tool Enhancements , Member Projects , Festool Reviews ??

Good Morning,

It used to be in a section for "Festool reference" material.  But that board had hardly any activity, so the material got moved into the main board.

It doesn't really belong in "Forum Technical" since this board is mainly for discussions about basic forum functioning (the software).

Forrest can post a link to his material anywhere he wants.  But I'm not sure it's necessary to have it linked in so many places.  People can always use the forum search function to locate the material.

Thanks,
Matthew

Matthew,

I don't have a lot of success using the searching tools.  Is there a post detailing how to use them?  For examplem, I cannot retrieve posts according to author.  Key words work to a limited extent.  Sometimes the tool doesn't even identify posts I have made containing the words I used for the key word search.  Obviously, I am doing something wrong, or failing to do what is required.

If use of highly effective, easily navigated searching tools became standard practice for everyone on FOG, that would vastly reduce the need for entry of many posts that are greatly overlapping.  I am "guilty" of this duplication of posts and would like to reduce my doing so.  Use of that search tool to identify earlier posts that are highly relevant and the ability to insert hyperlinks in newer posts should make for a more efficient FOG, but I do not know how to accomplish these goals at present.

Dave,
Unfortunately, the current version of the forum software we use does not allow searching just by username.  You can narrow your search results by using the username and key words, but not username alone.

I've been voicing my objections to this limitation for over a year!  I'm hoping the designers will add username-only searches in the next version of the software.

Other than that, the search features are very effective.  You should be able to get excellent results using any key words.  You can define your search by board, if you want, and choose how the results are displayed and sorted.

Thanks,
Matthew

Dave

I have also had problems with the search engine - see my post from three months ago.

The nearest thing I know of a user guide ishttp://festoolownersgroup.com/index.php?action=help;page=searching but it's basic and pretty generic to all SMF-based forums.

For example, I cannot retrieve posts according to author.  Key words work to a limited extent.

As you've discovered. the search engine doesn't allow:

  Search for:  *
  by user:  Dave Ronyak

The two methods I use are:

  Search for:  "Dave R." kapex
  Match all words
  by user:  *

The above example looks for messages where the word "kapex" appears together with the phrase "Dave R." (which is how you usually sign your messages)

As that can be a bit hit-or-miss, a sure-fire method of getting all the posts for a particular person is:

Click on the user's name, eg Dave Ronyak to get their profile, and then click on Show the last posts of this person.. That gives 30 messages per page, and you can use your browser's built-in Find function (eg CTRL-F for Internet Explorer running under Windows), to hunt for a specific word in these 30 posts, before going to the next 30 posts and searching them. However, this method is pretty laborious when searching through the messages of someone who posts a lot - like you, who has more than 50 pages of 30 messages each!  ;D

Sometimes the tool doesn't even identify posts I have made containing the words I used for the key word search.

Do you have an example of that?

Regards

Forrest

Thanks, Forrest and Matthew.  At least I now know it is not just me and my PC problems.  Thanks for the round about way of searching a particular member's posts.
