Festool End-User Training (Cabinet Construction @ Indianapolis) - Seeking Applicants

I agree with Fred,

They take the selection process very seriously.  I'll bet that they had quite a response to the proposal.  If you go back and read the original post if there was a typo in it it could mean Wednesday of "THE" next week.

I'm like everyone else - waiting for news.

It's my understanding that the selected attendees were contacted yesterday for this class.  All eight selected applicants said that they would be able to attend.

I know this may be discouraging but I would like to remind everyone that applied that we will have additional classes.  We had to select from a LOT of applicants.  There will be at least one more class in December at each of our training facilities and I know there are already plans being formulated for classes in 2010.  Also, should anyone need to cancel, we have a list of alternates.

We would like to thank everyone who took the time to apply for the class.

Shane,

I hope you're taking videos of the training, at least the classroom portion.  Obviously it's not as good as the live class, but for those of use who can't be there, it would be a great resource.  I suspect that this would give viewers a lot of "Ah ha!" moments.

Thanks,

Dan.

Drat's!  Foiled again...  :( :( :(

I guess my email got "lost in the mail" - bummer!  :-)

In all seriousness, I know the folks that do attend will be very impressed with their experience.  I definitely was!

Curious- the course structure is suited to Cabinetmakers, but Cabinetmakers would already have that knowledge.

Surely it isn?t aimed at the beginner/armature/hobbyist market for them to go out into the industry? Or is it just for them to make their own kitchens ???

Tezzer,

I think that this class is designed to show how the Festool complete system can be utilized to construct cabinets.  Cabinet makers may or may not use all the various Festool components and a course like this might get them to alter their work processes if it can be shown effectively. That might not have been said correctly - it rings of marketing - which it isn't meant to imply.

I wouldn't be surprised in the least if this is a preliminary class that will be used - just like the first one was - to help develop separate courses and work out bugs.  The initial post indicated that this was going to be an advanced class and that they were planning to have similar classes for less advanced individuals in the future.  A class like this was one of the suggestions made during our discussions made at the first class.

The folks at Festool do listen to what is said by those who attend and I am sure will use that information to modify / improve / augment their training options.  If I remember correctly, other than in Europe this is the only other Festool Division that is offering these types of opportunities.

I'd like to take the class because I am planning to build a new set of kitchen cabinets for myself next year and while my Dad is a professional cabinet maker (now retired) and can easily teach me to build them the way he does it, I'm also interested in learning how to do more w/ my Festool equipment and less with his shop "big iron".

Fred

Tezzer,

It also states that class will be for onsite cabinet construction.
Not many cabinet makers that I know of do much of there work onsite.

Chris,

I think that is the thrust of Festools class. As a cab. builder I used to build only in my shop. With the addition of the Festool product line I now build wherever is most suitable. Depending on the project the customers garage or backyard may actually be preferred. The class may be geared toward cabinets but any similar 'built-in' would/could be built using the same techniques.

With the decrease in new building I see an upswing in remodels. One good way to add value and a fresh look to a home is with new cabs., bars, hutches ect.

Maybe Festool is hoping that other finish carpenters will start actively looking at this market. We know many of the bigger cab. shops have closed their doors and that leaves a void.

Just one mans opinion of course.

Chuck

Like a lot of people I would have learned a lot in this class - and wish I had made it into the class. It would have been easier to figure out what was going on if Festool had:
1. Sent an automatic e-mail confirming receipt of my completed survey.
2. Sent me an e-mail notifying me that I had not been selected.

I hope they are able to figure out how to give more of us this opportunity. For me, I imagine that during the class I'd discover several additional tools that would be "must haves" for me (so they'd sell more tools).  AND with better skills I'd do a better job of inspiring others to try and use Festool.

In the meantime, I'm glad I can count on this forum to help me learn.

Mac, this was partially my fault.  My understanding is that we had every intention of notifying those who were not selected by email.  I didn't realize that had not happened when I posted that selected participants had been notified.  We needed to wait for all of them to confirm their ability to attend before we could notify those not selected.  Regarding receiving an email confirmation that the survey was received, I will need to check to see if that's something that we can do and will be sure to pass that feedback along to the person who administers the surveys.  This is a new program and we will need to continue to refine the process based on feedback for both the selection process and the class itself.

Again, I would like to remind all applicants that there will be additional opportunities to participate in end-user training.  I have recommended that we choose the next set of attendees from existing applications.

Just thought I would share a few photos that I popped in and took throughout the day.  I wasn't in the classroom but I know some of what was covered was cutting down sheet goods with the TS and parallel guides, routing dadoes with the OF 1010, using the LR 32 system for hinges and shelf pins, and the Domino for joining panels and face frames.

Bob, just like with the last class, I would prefer to let folks identify themselves or remain anonymous as they so choose.  I suspect some of them will be posting up more photos over the next few days.  I saw some cameras.

I would have liked to have gone, it seemed like it would be a fun couple of days. Thanks for posting the pics Shane and I'm looking forward to the users posting their feedback.

You should have set up out side today for the class.  It was a beautiful November day in Indiana.

Brice,

I thought that it would have been neat for you and Per ( if he is still around ) to go.  Granted, I personally thought that it would have been neater for ME to go but just like the first class, this is a class to work some of the bugs out and the people chosen had more experience than I.

Ooops, good point!
