Festool ETS EC150/5 6" Random Orbit Sander

Just picked up mine from the dealer. Question: what are the pad options for the ETS EC? The pad looks thinner than what you have on the regular ETS so I assume they are not interchangeable. But the website doesn't yet have a list of accessories.

Edit: one more thing, is the sleeve for the dust hose available separately? Or do you have to buy the whole kit?

I have the ETS 150/3 is there anybody that can give a side by side comparison yet?

At this point the zippered sleeve is not available separately, however, I think it will be available later as a replacement part, as sooner or later they will become damaged goods. Also note that the hose it is bundled with is a new continuous tapered design. I don't know if that makes an impact on the design of the zippered sleeve or not. If you take the $250 asking price and subtract the price ($80) of a Systainer, the 3 piece hose assembly isn't priced unfairly. We'll find out...mine will arrive on Monday.

Why is no one ordering the 5" model.

It could also be that from my personal observations, there seems to be a strong preference for the 150's on this forum- I could be wrong- but I've been browsing a LOT of posts because I'm trying to decide between the 125 and the 150 for myself in the upcoming weeks. I figure I'll be going for the 150 since I'll be picking the RO 90 DX up, so that would handle all my small tasks for what I do, the ETS (most likely EC since it's the "newer/better") 150 and the RO 150 will work for my medium size and heavy stock removals and I will have my half sheet for flattening goods. That said- I could see the 125 being a good fit for me as well- but honestly- I've used a 1/2 sheet for everything in my life til now, so the 3" and the 6" seem to fit well for my choices.

I haven't made up my mind on the dust collection yet. Buying a lot of those bags really doesn't make me happy. I think I will have to get a cyclone to go in the middle?

How long does a bag last on the midi?

Right now I have:

TS 55 saw
Domino DF 500
OF 1400 Router
and now the ETS EC150/5 sander.

And I'm ordering the Carvex PS 420 EBQ in a few minutes LOL....

Say cheese..... I ordered the 5" model...it will join the ETS and the Rotex on Monday.

I also have the Rotex sanders and the ETS 5". The old ETS is my favorite sander and I am questioning if the new ETS will be totally redundant.

Personally I don't think the 125 is going to be a great mover. At least the old ETS125 differentiated itself from the ETS150/3 by having an even finer orbit - the new ETS125/3 just says Festool is too lazy (or greedy) to engineer an interchangeable pad for the 150 base unit.

I'm likely to sell my 150's and buy 150 EC's in the future, but I'm not going to rush!

Yeah -- I was already invested in the 150 system with the RO150 and ETS 150/3, and would not want to spend the price of another sander getting a full complement of 125 abrasives.

Perhaps because they already have an inventory of 6" sanding discs?

Once you move up from a 5"/125mm sander to a 6"/150mm pad size, you tend to spend less time sanding larger surfaces, so the larger sanders get more user fans that way. I used a 5" Bosch sander for years until I bought my first ETS150 in 2004. The larger pad size was like, gee, why didn't I do this years ago.... [embarassed]

I also had a very difficult time making a choice. I waffled between the 125 and the 150 EC for the last 3-4 weeks. For a hobbyist/DIYer, the cost of the paper is killer. I know it sounds foolish but I'm already heavily invested in paper assortments for the RO 90, RO/ETS 125, LS 130, DTS 400 and RS 2. I just couldn't bring myself to order a different sized paper along with more Systainers to store the paper in.

I'm redoing a bathroom and another thing I noticed is that using the RO to sand the vertical walls is rather clumsy and heavy, while switching to the ETS is labor intensive and takes more time because of the smaller sanding stroke. I'm hoping that the EC with its 3mm stroke will be "just right" when it comes to the ceiling. Monday's the day...

Just confirmed that the ETS-EC uses the same pads as the regular ETS.  Thank god -- don't have to drop another $150 on accessories.

My ETS EC 150/3 was finally delivered on Saturday, so I thought I'd post a few first impressions...

BTW, I purchased the 150/3 instead of the 150/5 because I've been building modern minimalist furniture using exotic veneers lately and I wanted a sander which was less aggressive on the veneers.

I'd like to qualify my comments by stating that this is my first Festool sander, so I can only compare it to my 18 year old DeWalt 5" ROS fitted with a Mirka Abranet base pad.  I've been very happy with the Mirka Abranet abrasives, so I modified some 150 mm Mirka pad protectors to match the Festool 17 hole layout and fitted the ETS EC 150/3 with the hard (blue) base pad, the modified Mirka pad protector and some 120 grit Abranet.

My first test was on some dirty weathered scraps of Baltic birch ply I had.  I have to admit, I was very surprised at the power of the 150/3.  For a "less aggressive" sander, this bad boy definitely has some muscle. Within seconds, the surface was clean and new looking. Although the sander is actually heavier than I anticipated, I love the way it just glides over the surface - then I realized that I had forgotten to turn down the suction on my new CT 26 - it was set on MAX!  Well, that was a surprise, I thought I was suppose to turn down the suction for a sander, but apparently, that's not necessary with the ETS EC models. BTW, the pad brake is awesome! Practically stops on a dime - no need for that "Sander Sitter" any more.

I didn't have as much time this weekend to use the sander as I would have liked to, but my first impressions are very positive. My only negative comment is that when you put the sander down with the hose attached, it doesn't balance on it's base pad.  Fortunately, a small block of 2 by 4 under the hose solves that problem. I did have a little difficulty forcing the new 27 mm hose over the dust collection tube, but I'm guessing that will loosen up over time.

All in all, I'm very happy with the ETS EC 150/3 so far.  I'm starting a new furniture project this week, so I'm anxious to see how it performs on veneer with the higher grit abrasives...    [big grin]

Just ordered a RO150 today. Mentioning this because I would like some advice on the best EC companion for this. It will be 150mm. But don´t know enough of the different results between 3mm stroke and 5 mm stroke.

I will take some paid jobs with my tools. At first sanding down some old wooden stairs. Thinking that both RO90 and RO150 are more difficult to hold completely flat to the surface. And that the EC might be used after RO´s has stopped at 80 grit.

Will the 5mm stroke version give real good results given that one are willing to go higher up in grit? Conversely (right word?), will the 3 mm be able to remove some wood to flatten a surface if it gets 80-100 grit? I can add that probably most of my work will be painted. Would also wanna use this for repairs on plasterboard an similar things.

And yes, I want the full package with sleeved hose for sure:-)
