festool impact driver

A percussive drill we call either a hammer drill (small size - regular drill chuck or SDS PLUS) or a rotary hammer (larger - SDS MAX, spline).

i had high hopes for the protool impact wrench which was kindly given to me by the local festool/protool rep for a one week trial period.

i knew after 10 minutes trying to install a 1/4 hex adapter so i could screw philip head screws and failing to do so miserably that this was not a tool required by a carpenter/joiner on a construction site.
i needed 2 different adapters plus a philips head bit and it kept falling out of the hollow wrench head.
thats 3 individual moving parts where normally you would have one moving part, the 1/4 philips head.
can you imagine the metal fatigue on those 3 moving parts.
it would cost a fortune!

i am not interested in an all-in-one impact driver/drill.
i want festool to release a dedicated impact driver.
if it is less noisy than the competition, great, if not, no problem for me.
but i believe this is a feature that festool have been testing, a quiet impact driver...

i would also like to see a dedicated l.e.d. light and stainless steel belt clip.

its not much to ask for these days, is it?

No  a percussion drill over here aint a hammer drill.   A hammer drill is a drill made specially for drill into hard material  so like a SDS drill.  A percussion drill is a drill/driver which has a hammer function which can be used to drill into walls but has very small impact so are pretty crap you might use it for two holes any more and you would get a hammer drill out.

SDS PLUS is a small rotary hammer.SDS MAX is a large rotary hammer.
Hammer drill are just like a regular drill but with light, fast hammer action usualy small holes.AKA PERCUSION DRILL.

Yeah but no where does it say a official name for that type of drill.  I cant see any where it actually says its called a Impact drill.  To me its just a multi drill which can do multiple things.   Like Impact WRENCH is the offical name for a Impact Wrench  but that drill you are calling it a impact drill but I cnt see any where on der thats whats its called.

Mastercabman,

I usually don't see the SDS plus drills labeled rotary hammers, but labeled hammer drills, yes.

JMB,

This one's for you.

I was just looking at the USA milwuakee site and noticed you lot call your drills and hammers different names! You lot r backwards  [poke] haahahaa!

I dont call Hammer Drills Percussion  the UK calls them Percussion!  To me that makes sense cus (UK) percussion drills are very low impact so only for soft blocks/bricks I never bother with percussion drills they are pretty useless drills really.   Hammer drill like the name its like a hammer gives a much harder impact for drilling larger holes into hard bricks/blocks and concrete.

The name Rotary hammer just seems odd cus Percussion drills turn and impact  so why add rotary its like saying these hammer drills rotate and hammer but Percussions rotate aswell so.......  I would just call Rotary hammer drill a Hammer drill.    Soon you  lot will be calling an impact drill a rotary impact drill heehee!

No problem Brice.  I was going to go into jack hammers with JMB, but that could be a lonnnnngggg night.

Rotary hammer are :Hammer with rotation
Hammer drill are:  drill with hammer

The difference is that the rotary hammer are much more powerful with the hammering mechanism. As you stated, the hammer drill have a weaker hammer action, best used for smaller holes.

lol i was going to say that aint an impact drill, it's a percussion drill. a tool that has a hammer mode for drilling in bricks or concrete.

but then like an impact driver who drives with impacts, an impact drill will drills with impacts i guess.
im getting confused lol, i have a Bosch SDS hammer drill that can drill or drill with hammer mode, but not just hammer without rotation. so is it an impact drill now?

anyway impact drills are not meanth for woodworking, and i don't see festool making an impact driver that can only do that.
like the cxs could have been just a driver like some other brands do, instead it's a fully functional drill/driver.

I've seen listings for "rotary drills" already and always wondered what other types of drills there were...

Well, there are also the rotary-bangy-turny ones,
and the bangy-bangy-turny ones,
And the louder-rotary-bangy-turny things, with the thing on the end,
And the louder-rotary-bangy-turny things, without the thingy, but NAINA...

You say semantics, I say some antics.
