Found this thread through an image search and had a follow up question:

Does anyone know if there is an internal physical difference between the #487555 (female) and the #487554 (male) Grips ?

I.e.  - Can both be opened?  Are both the same inside in that you can either slip in a hex bolt head or instead drop in a hex nut?  Or is the hex sleeve different internally (like perhaps the female grip uses a square nut?).

They're the same. Just to be sure, I pulled the ends of a CMS-OF part and my OF 1010 which use 487555 and 487554 respectively.

That's great!  Thank you for taking the time to check - and for previous parts list as well. 

Have a little jig project and it's hard to find large diameter 'ergonomic' grip knobs anymore in female thread,  the PC 839279 is also an option but I would have to cut off bolt, drill & tap.  After looking around I was surprised to discover that the Festool knobs are configurable while also being inexpensive.
