FESTOOL NEWSLETTER

Let me add to Shane's comments regarding email lists.

Most email lists aren't coming from catalog merchants. I know because we're in that industry and we're always looking for new ways to reach people. You simply can't find a list of Rockler email addresses or what have you. The closest you'll come is that some merchants will share the physical address of people who buy via the Internet.

Most email lists are compiled by companies like InfoUSA and they get your name through various means such as warranty cards, magazine subscriptions, surveys and what have you. Here's a blurb from InfoUSA on where names are reaped:

Business Information
?  We split apart and catalog 5,200 phone books, annual reports and other business directories to find information
on nearly every business in the nation.
?  We hand-key each record and call every business to make sure you have the most reliable information available.
?  Next, we add public record data from county courthouse filings, SEC and 10k filings, and Secretary of State data.
?  50,000 new businesses are added every week from sources such as new business registrations and utility
hookups so you can be the first to reach a hot new property.
?  Every month, we match and clean the data with the USPS National Change of Address (NCOA), ZIP+4 and
Delivery Sequence File to standardize and keep the addresses accurate.

Consumer Information
?  We split apart and catalog 4,300 telephone directories.
?  Data specialists examine each listing and enhance it with buying habit and lifestyle information from real estate
transactions, product registrations, magazine subscriptions, and survey responses.
?  Every week, we also add 300,000 new movers so you have the opportunity to win their business first.
?  Every month, we match and clean the data with the USPS National Change of Address (NCOA), ZIP+4 and
Delivery Sequence File to standardize and keep the addresses accurate.

I'm proud to say that the catalog industry is very clean in this regard. On the other hand, watch out for things like free magazines and surveys if you don't want your email circulated.

Ron & Shane, I understand and very much agree with your philosophy but I am buying directly through Festool by purchasing through Bob am I not? Fred

Fred,

By purchasing your Festool products from Bob, you are not buying directly through Festool.  Ordering from the Festool toll free number or website would constitute buying direct.  We do not require that any dealer provide us with a customer's email address in order to process tool registrations or drop shipments nor do we wish for them to unless it falls within the guidelines of their privacy policy.

The best course of action to follow is to always review a website's privacy policy.  In the case of Bob, his privacy policy states that he will only share your personal information (including email address) with third parties if it is necessary to process your credit card payment, comply with a request for service or if required by law.  Again, any reputable company will have a privacy policy clearly stated for your review (typically the link appears at the bottom of the website).

I understand what you are saying but consider this... By doing business with Bob Marino, you are doing business with Festool, Festool is doing business with all of its vendors, who are doing business with... well you get the point.  You don't want to share your personal information with everyone upstream from the person/company with whom you are doing business.

I think I can speak for everyone when I say that we all want to be in complete control of what comes in our inboxes.  And, speaking of that, remember that by making your email address visible on your profiles you are potentially exposing yourself to web bots that crawl sites to harvest email addresses for the sole purpose of spam.

Shane

Does that explain why I keep getting emails saying I won the lottery in England? I wondered what they were from.

Shane, thank you and I must admit to never having read Uncle Bob's privacy policy as I already believed in him. However, I am very, very pleased with Festool's, Uncle Bob's and all of the other Festool vendors with similar policies. Now just get me on the darn newsletter.  ::) Fred

So, how did everyone like our first newsletter?

I would very much appreciate your feedback and to give you each the opportunity to comment on what you would like to see in future editions.  Also, I know that I have seen some great tips on the forum.  If you have a good tip that helps you work Faster, Easier or Smarter with Festool products and would like to have it featured in the newsletter, please email it to toolietips@festoolusa.com.  Are there any tools or accessories you would like to have us feature?

Thanks!

Shane

Shane, thanks for giving us an opportunity to help shape the newsletter. I for one would like to see some of the tools that aren't in the spotlight as much, DTS 400, Deltex, RS2E, LS 130, OF 2000 and HL 850. And you guys have some great accessories that no one really know much about, the routing aid, VS 600, SYS-PORT and Sortainers just to name a few. So, I'd like to see an accessory be featured in each newsletter. And one last idea, maybe feature a user's project, with a picture and brief description of the project and the tools used.
