Festool Plannex popcorn/ texture removal

We have a job coming up removing the popcorn ceiling from a client's house. We purchased the Festool Planex 2. We are practicing on my ruined garage drywall that has orange peel and a couple of layers of paint. We can't seem to get consistent removal without cutting through the "grey" color of paper straight onto this "brown" layer. Any advice? currently using 80 grit.

Use a different grit. I seem to recall using 120 or 150 for popcorn removal. I honestly don't even know why they'd sell 80 grit for the Planex, except maybe for legit plaster work.

Hi, we use 60 to 80 grit on painted popcorn,if not a higher grit works best,for knockdown 120 or higher.guy

If the home is pre 1970 there is a good chance of asbestos, and I would treat it differently. In fact non painted popcorn is very easy to scrap off with a little water applied, doing almost no damage to the paper layer. Otherwise start at a lower grit and work up. No need to remove everything as you can put mud on to smooth it, then sand, then mud, then sand...and paint. The high spots left behind initially will be leveled once the mud is sanded.

I use a lot of 24 and 36 grit to rip walls that have been painted and need to have a layer of mud applied to up the flatness from poor quality initial work, major repairs, or an addition. Cutting heavy into the paint helps the mud bond better.
