Festool Road School - Coming to a city near you! (Program ended)

I was at today's road show in Mt Kisco and a big thanks to the Tool Nut for hosting.  They were very nice (but I knew that already because I've been in their store).  The event went very smoothly and on an organizational level they did everything right.

Over the course of 6 hours the Festool instructor built a simple wall cabinet and it came out very well.  Just because of the nature of having 75 people in a conference room the audience was really mostly watching what was being done projected on a side screen with the opportunity to ask questions - needless to say that gets pretty squirmy pretty fast.

I already owned all the tools (or similar model) of all the tools that were demonstrated.  What I was looking for in today's demo were the little tips on how to use those tools better that I hadn't already collected from the FOG.  I think because of the high quality of advice here on the FOG and the quality of the Youtube videos available (especially you erock) I really can't say I saw anything today that I didn't already know, and most of it I had already demonstrated to others in my home shop.  So in the end while it was a good demonstration I just obviously wasn't the target audience.  Maybe a year ago before I bought most of it and played with it and spent lots of time reading the FOG I would have been.

This left me wondering exactly what the target audience was for this event.  It seems to me that it can only be defined as people who don't know much about many Festool tools yet have heard of them enough to be motivated to take a day out of their lives to devote to learning more.  That would seem like a fairly small group of people to me, however I know that there were people in just that situation in the crowd, I just don't know how they found out about the event.  It was also obvious from the hands raised when asked about tool ownership that there was a large percentage of the group who already owned multiple Festool tools.  I'd be very curious how much that group felt they got out of the day.  I'm sure the guy who won the Kapex felt it was time very well spent :-)

I really don't want to sound like the Tool Nut or the Festool guys weren't great hosts.  It was nice being around other Festool fans.  But if you've spent enough time on the FOG to be able to recognize more than 5 userids here, I'm not sure there was much benefit in attending.

PS - I expect some dates to be added soon.

Hawaii is on deck some time soon.

Mid-Atlantic states in October/November.

Southeast in December.

Texas??? Texas???  The Dallas Woodcraft just relocated this week.  Might be a good tie in to promote their new location.

Howard, I think I had posted before that Texas would likely be the end of year. I don't have any specific info at this time.

Is this show still on the road?

Did they ever make it to Texas?

I looked forward to it all last year so I hope I didn't miss it.

Please let me know.

Thanks!

Well, I have some not-so-good news. The road school is no longer touring, nor did it make it to TX. Sorry.

Shane

Well that sucks.  I'm sure I'm not the first to say it but Festool needs to offer hands on training on their tools beyond Indianapolis & Henderson.  Some folks just can't afford to make the trip let alone hit the lottery of getting one of the limited spaces.  And don't try to tell me the Festool reps will provide the training when they just cut the number in Texas down to one and he's covering several states.  Getting the most out of Festools is different than other tools.  Understanding what they can do helps justify the high prices.  Videos are a poor alternative because they lack the interactive nature of being in the same room with an expert.  I have personally done several unpaid demos at my local Rockler and sold numerous Festools to people by simply showing them what they can do.  Sorry for the rant but sometimes Festool's lack of support leaves me scratching my head.

I don't think you can say that Festool has a lack of support.  I don't see any other tool company doing any training period.  There is a limit to what companies can do for their customers.
Just my opinion.

I'm not trying to flame Festool.  I love their products and phone support.  My investment into their products exceeds 15K and is still growing.  My problem is with their local support and training opportunities.  I've been to every licensed Festool dealer in Houston and very rarely encounter a store employee who is knowledgeable enough to show me what a tool can do.  To be honest, most of them seem clueless.  Festools have superior capabilities to other power tools but often have a learning curve.  I am self taught on their using tools and it hasn't always been easy.  I am sure their are more tips and tricks that I haven't figured out yet.  This can be frustratingly intimidating to new users and along with Festools high prices keep prospective buyers at bay.  Festool should not be an exclusive club.  My personal opinion is they would do themselves a big favor if they would offer more training opportunities at the local level.  I am very disappointed that they discontinued the road school before covering the entire country as promised.

If your local dealers have staff that are not knowledgeable on the products they sell, that is the responsibility of the dealer, not Festool. We offer training to our dealers and it's their choice whether to participate in that training.

Regarding offering end user training in other locations, our insurance prohibits us from doing hands-on training outside of our own facilities. However, we have begun to foster relationship with woodworking schools, like Gregory Paolini's, to expand our offerings. It's not something that can happen overnight. The end user training program didn't even exist until a few years ago.

Lastly, there was never a promise that the road school would cover the entire country, which is virtually impossible. We live in a rather geographically large country, after all. Joe, I was providing you and others with the most up-to-date information I had about the plan for road school events. I was told that if time permitted that there would be an event in Texas before the end of the year. Apparently, time ran out. All I can do is apologize.

This was my last comment on the topic of it coming to Texas.

Shane

Shane,

Just to be clear - I have nothing but the utmost respect and appreciation for you personally and Festool as a company.

I was speaking out of disappointment but remain hopeful Festool will recognize the need to develop hands-on education programs for end users at the local level.

Thanks!

I'm going to chime in here, as one of the very first dealers (^ look! photo proof!) to have the pleasures of hosting Festool Road School w/ Mr. Allen Kensley, and I only have one major statement to say -- this program is what helped put K-119 on the map in the Festool Universe, and we can't wait to do it again.

K-119 is a small dealer, started carrying Festool in 2007, and frankly, we didn't do too good and even considered dropping the brand altogether in 2009.  I joined the company in 2011, and by sheer chance fell in love with the Green Koolaid; yet even with efforts of attending dealer training courses and my own attention to learning, could not amount to the impact of a single day with Allen.  I suppose that's the difference with a Master Carpenter.

Our clients loved it.  Our staff learned greatly from it.  And I'm unabashed to say that our Festool sales have grown significantly since.  As noted by many previous posts in this thread, Festools are premium products that indeed have a learning curve.

A successful dealer must have 3-components
1.) product knowledge (theoretical)
2.) sales and service training
3.) applications capability (practical)

#3 is where Road School and Allen come in to save the day.

Gotta run, but I hope I've made my position from a dealer perspective clear.  Shane, and all the other Festool powers that may be, Save Festool Road School -- please and thank you!

PS

Please don't forget Atlanta.   ;D

We will be in Atlanta for IWF later this year.

Will this be for classes or simply a festool booth?

We will not be conducting hands on training there to my knowledge. We will be there for the trade show. But, there's also a possibility of an end user event, yet to be determined for sure. As I stated earlier, we cannot conduct hands on training outside of our own facilities for insurance reasons.
