Wanted to get an official word on the transfer of warranty in the US. If I buy a used tool is it still covered under the 3 yr warranty period from original date of purchase for the new owner?

Yes, the warranty is transferable. There's nothing you need to do to transfer it.

Thanks Shane.

It's worth pointing out that this answer is with regard to Festool USA only, and that other warranty conditions may apply for other countries.

I know the FOG is run by Festool USA, but it tends to be an International Forum.

Yes, as Garry pointed out, this policy is specific to the US and Canada. Check with your country's Festool website for policies specific to your country. I usually point that out, but I thought the title of the thread made it clear. Thanks.

i just bought some festools off craigslist even got the original bill of sale from the guy so I called Festool 8773378665 and assured that the warranty follows the tool not the owner.  I am Happy happy happy

BUT....if the tool was never registered and if the buyer doesn't have access to the original bill of sale (which details the date that the tool was first sold) then all buyers of used Festool tools (those with a serial number) need to understand that there's no way to prove that the warranty is still in effect.

This might seem crazy, but it's true. Even though there's a unique identifier (the tool's serial number) printed right on the placard that's affixed to a tool, it's basically a meaningless number and serves no reliable function, other than to tell the deepest levels of Festool what run of tools a particular tool is part of (necessary info for the purposes of being able to determine which tools might be affected by a manufacturing problem, like when rolling out a recall) unless/i], that is, the tool was properly registered.

Yup, calling Festool and supplying a serial number will get you nowhere unless that serial number has a) been registered and b) pertains to the actual tool you're calling about. Regarding the latter, I recently called Festool USA and provided a used router's serial number only to be told that the tool linked to that serial number is a dust extractor(!). In other words, assuming a used tool buyer lacks access to the original bill of sale, the entire question of warranty coverage relies on either the retailer or the tool's first owner having registered the tool and them having done so accurately.

Which leads me to issue the following three-part plea:

To all potential buyers of used Festool products (specifically, those products that have a serial number - meaning that they originally qualified for the 3-year warranty), if you can't get hold of the original bill of sale and/or if the serial number was never registered then you a) need to assume that the tool is warranty-less and b) adjust the price that you are willing to pay accordingly.

And, to all sellers of used serial-numbered Festool products, please make it clear from the outset whether you are able to provide proof-of-warranty. If you cannot, then please say so up front and adjust your asking price accordingly. It kills me that the vast majority of sellers of used serial-numbered Festools (particularly those who sell on that well-known online auction site and/or even many of those who make use of this site's "Classifieds" section) neglect, in their listings, to address the issue of warranty coverage right up front. I'm always having to request it. Sometimes this works in my favor but other times it does not.

And, finally, to all owners of Festool serial-numbered tools, please, please, please ensure that your tool(s) is/are registered and always retain multiple copies of the original bill of sale. I think it's worth knowing that those of us who rely on the used tool market to access the Festool line of products are regularly at your mercy and that a little due diligence on the front-end vastly improves our back-end experience.

Many thanks. ;)

I have bought several tools, including a Kapex used. How is the best way to find out how old they are and if they were originally registered for warranty?

Just register them (this just needs product and serial number, which you can take from the label on the machine), you'll get a PDF with the warranty information and it'll be added to the 'my machines' list (which contains the original purchase date and end of 3 year warranty/10 year part guarantee dates). Or a visit from the local police in case the 'used' machines are missing somewhere.

In case your country is affected by the website 'update' issue you should at least get the PDF.

We don't get anything in the US
