Finally updated from that puny 8" Oliver

I needed more work piece support for my jointing purposes.

I have been doing a lot of tall mop boards, 6" up 8" tall with built up caps, some cover the top edge of the 13/16" mop boards, some do not.

So edge jointing a 12' long 8" piece of soft maple gets to be a pain on my 8" Oliver jointer, I think the infeed table is like 36".

So, I got me a 16" JA Fay & Egan 316 jointer.  98" long bed, with a 52" infeed table.

5hp DD 3phase motor with a brake.  Time to clean the tables, load up my Oliver I sold and gently persuade the 2500 pound JA Fay into place.

Pictures are on the other computer, I will update soon....

Darcy,

I do not advise trying to joint your daughters hiney no matter what she's done.  Plus, she'll just wind up kicking you in the wrong spot as you pass her over the cutters.  [tongue]

Too bad I didn't bring my camera with me when I was at my sheet goods supplier in Phili.  You would have been in cast iron heaven had you seen his old machines, one of which is a specialized piece of equipment that hydraulically moves the wood through 4 different stages of machining in a square all on this one big unit.  It's a German machine.  All you do is stick the wood in one corner and it feeds it all the way around doing God knows what to it.

Was it a Hundegger Ken?

That name sounds very familiar, but I was so concentrated on all of the workings on it that I don't recall.  I'll ask the owner next time I speak with him.  Funny thing is he's an avid antique tool collector like me, however, for a guy that could easily make up nice display cases from his mill shop, his antique hand tools are laying on the floor in the corner covered in saw dust.  He pulled some of them out for me and they are a sweet collection.  He likes the older stuff.  His son wants to upgrade the shop to new CNC equipment.

I am now actively seeking to buy some of the old Festo machinery.

I would like to get some of them for shutter work and a few other select one's they made.

I always see them for sale on the west coast....

Thats pretty sweet.  The only Classic tool my buddy has in his shop is a Belt sander with a floating table. The belt is about 8-9 feet long and the table sits under it for doing large slabs of wood. it takes up 12-15 feet and 2 arms with the barrels for the belt has to be bolted down to the concrete. lol

The only shop planer I have used is a 2003ish Felder AD751 planer/joiner on a 3 phase. It is a beast  and is set up with wheels on one side and a special handle that jacks it up and rolls it around. He has a Felder CF741 table saw set up the same way. His 3 phase system is old and loud, yours sounds much more quit.

So when are you going to get a real bandsaw?  Y'know - one like this:

Those are some sweet head saws.

I am currently in negotiations on a 36" American BS.

I might have the opportunity to get into a 7000 sq/ft shop space for chump change.  If that happens, I can get even bigger stuff.

I spent a few hours playing with the 316 yesterday.

I had several hunks of floor joists from some old farm houses stored in the shop.

I went ahead and face jointed several of them, some oak and some chestnut.

It sure is nice being able to face join a 10" wide hunk of timber.

Almost done.  My guard should be done being repaired Monday or Tuesday and then just a couple odds and ends.

Thanks guys, I am looking for a bigger building for next year.  Like to find about 3-4k sq/ft.

I want some other big things.....

I do take advantage of my many festool sanders to get these things all cleaned up and ready for paint.
