I received some veneer samples which are wavey, so will contact cement those onto some sample mdf unless yellow glue is better?

What is normally used as a finish for veneer for furniture?

Is the veneer paper backed or natural?  Adhesive selection varies based on that.  Wavy veneer should be flattened prior to using or it will tend to cause voids.

[member=1674]Peter Halle[/member] - natural... And pretty thin.

I have a vacuum pump, so I could try bagging it?
What glue do you recommend?

Then the old question is finish. In the I mostly did maple and used a clear Deft lacquer. Or I did oak and used a water based poly.
Lately Jarrah using linseed.

The veneer is zebra wood, pear, myrtle... So I am bewildered as to what to use??

Thanks [member=4105]tjbnwi[/member] - I'll get some cold press.
i guess the question on the finish is what do people normally use for zebra wood ? Or pear or myrtle ?

If I thought I could epoxy it and 2-pack clear coat it without fish eyes I would do that.
Are oils used?

Titebond Coldpress and a vacuum bag has worked perfectly for me with my projects so I have to agree with Tom on glue.  Finish advice I may give concerning furniture, items subject to wear, abrasive movements, etc. may benefit from a harder finish than oils but it's really a matter of opinion and desired look you want.  I've also used the mirror-coat brand epoxy like you mentioned wanting to try, didn't have any problems at all and it turned out great, I just followed the directions very carefully.

Good luck,
CB

I think I'll try the "Sam Maloof" oil on a test piece.
Or some home blend of spirits, tung and linseed.

I tried that on a teak table once, and some combo of silicon, gave me horrible fisheyes where the surface tension of the epoxy was not wetting out on the veneer.

To add insult to injury, when I 2-pac clear coated it started to fisheye again.
The Haus-boss wanted to help with a small bush filling the depressions and asked to use my respirator.
I had hd it on for an hour, and had given it a quick inspection before I started.
So I took it off and handed it to her.
There was a red back spider that was camped out in it, hiding up underneath behind the face gasket.
For some reason it decided, after about a minute, that it had enough, and start having a go at her beak...
She now has her own respirator.

After the drama ended, I blocked it with 1200 and 2000 and polished it. It came out pretty good, but the task left quite an impression.
