Finishing Walnut

Hello -

I am working on some built-ins (see http://festoolownersgroup.com/member-projects/built-in-master-closet-lined-in-walnut/ ).

I was originally hoping to keep the walnut in its natural state, but after sanding out gaps I filled with walnut dust/glue, the walnut appears a little dull and I reversed my position and will need to apply something.

I'm looking for a natural look, something to bring out the grain and depth a little. Oil? Wipe on poly? What would be your choice?

Hi Alfa

You cannot believe what good timing this is...

I am just finishing a walnut pedestal desk. When I started I planned to use Osmo PolyX which would produce the duller sheen that I think that you are seeking. However, Osmo UK (who had been following a video series I am making about the desk build) contacted me and asked me to try a new product - Osmo PolyX Gloss. I have already created a thread about this product:

PolyX Gloss may be too shiny for you and so the normal PolyX might be better. The good thing is that if normal PolyX is too dull you can easily go over it with PolyX Gloss.

When the final video for the desk is made I will create a thread about the whole project.

Oil.

The seat is walnut with 2 coats of HD Surfix oil.

Walnut loves oil, but an oil finish won't offer much protection against wear, though its very easy to repair.  It will leave a nice natural look and feel good to the touch, just be careful and take your time, apply oil, wipe off excess, leave it to cure, repeat if needed.  Too much oil too soon will make a gummy mess.

Choice of a finishing product is a very subjective matter.  Buy small amount of oil and poly and try them on scraps.

I know a lot of folk who swear by the Sam Maloff mixture of oil and wax sold by Rockler.

Fairly new here, been lurking in the back ground for some time.
I laid this Walnut floor about 3 years ago, it is treated with Osmo Polyx silk Matt oil, it wears very well.
I have been using Osmo for 10 years now on floors and about 7 years on furniture.
