First attempt at veneer

I just ordered some curly European sycamore veneer and some Titebond cold press glue, for an upcoming project.

There will need to be one seam in each panel.    I am a little worried about glue bleed through in general and a lot worried about the glue line.  Most (but not all) of the veneering I see on YouTube first tape then open up and apply glue to the seam between the two pieces of veneer.  I will be using GF dye stain on it.

Doesn't glue on the joint pretty much guarantee that the dye stain won't be absorbed well along the glue line ?

If you have tape on the front face of the veneer, in theory, there shouldn't be significant glue getting onto the face. Another factor to consider is that you will be preparing the surface of the veneered panel which should clean up any residual glue before applying the dye.

However, the whole 'tape the edge of the veneer joint' approach is not really necessary. If you tape the joint well, you should be fine with just gluing the stitched together panel down.

For what it's worth, I've done a lot of veneering and the joints are fine as long as the veneer is flat and the joints are well cut. I've tried the glue on the edges approach, and it works, but I don't think it improved the joint.

What you should be careful about is applying the right amount of glue.  You can definitely get ripples under the veneer if you put it on too heavily.

One caution about GF Dye Stain - they put some small amount of binder in it, which makes it difficult to repair if you accidentally sand it away.
