First Large Project - crib for granddaughter

ya -- my wife was optimistic about my building year, apparently... she got me  [eek] 12 of each saying 2013 and either "Grandpa", "Dad", or "Dave", so I could build for anybody.

Good News!  I just found out that I get to build another crib!  My youngest daughter is having her second baby.  I didn't get to build anything for her first, so this one gets a crib from Grandpa.  Now if I could just get her to decide on a design!

That is one impressive first projece! Congradulations!!! Did you build from plans or is it your own design?

It was done from some (crappy) plans.  The designer messed up the dimensions.  Another builder hit the issues before I did, so I had a heads-up that it was coming, so that helped... but still was a pain.  But, in the end it all turned out good, and my granddaughter loves it!

VERY impressed with your efforts. My first project didn't look ANYTHING like that. And it sounds like your wife knows how to motivate you as well - those are nice labels.

What's next?

Very nice looks to me like you made a family heirloom that will be passed down trough generations..

lovely job Grandpa

Great work and a beautiful grand daughter too. Hard to beat what grand parents do for grand children.

Seriously impressive!

Thanks!

Crib number 2 is to be underway soon (my other daughter).  Different design, and more new challenges and learning opportunities.  As soon as they know the gender (mid May), they'll allow me to finalize the design and get it moving forward.

That has been my problem, I make something for one daughter then the other daughter wants one and then some times the wife too.  So not I just make three of everything.

Love the natural walnut. This will become a family heirloom for generation to come.

This turned out gorgeous. I am also very new to woodworking and would love to make a crib half as nice as this... I was hoping to build something similar for my baby to be (wife is 12 weeks pregnant). Any tips or advice would be appreciated. I'm hoping to buy a domino this week and I have a few basic tools already. Could you provide me a link to the plans you used (although crappy they are better than nothing) and what did you use to finish the walnut? Thank you so much and I hope I can follow in your footsteps making something this beautiful.

NineFingers,
What a wonderful gift for your grandchild.  Graceful curves and I especially like the small inlay that identifies you as the maker.

kvondrak,
Welcome to the FOG and when you get to build yours, please show some pictures here!

I love the crib. You did a wonderful job,  but hey...when it comes from the heart to someone you love it can only be great. Thanks for sharing.

WOW....beautiful crib.  I bought a similar design for my children from a big name Baby Store with 0 craftsmanship for huge $$$.  And I'm not ashamed to admit the photo with the engraved token got me a little choked up....Thanks for sharing

Thanks for the kind words.  :)

The next crib is in the final stages... varnish is going on.  Pics will be posted in a new thread in a week or two.
