First router advice

While a variable-speed router is preferable, there is the alternative of an aftermarket Router Speed Control -- note that this one won't work on soft-start routers.  I've never used one of these products, as all my routers are variable speed.

For me variable speed is a must have.
Two main reasons:-
1/ The larger the diameter of the cutter the slower it should be run at.
2/ When cutting different materials a slower speed is required i.e. plexiglas, too fast and it will melt.

Most router bit manufacturers will give a recommended speed range for their cutters.

Rob,

Agree 100%.

Corwin,

I never new about the variable speed control/adapter; thanks for posting, but for the OP, he'd be adding $50.00 to the cost and another layer of electronics to his router. As an aside, not sure if the newer PC's are soft start, but ss is a feature that I find useful as well as safer.

Interesting choise you have. If i have choise again, defenetley OF 1400. Its a good tool. OF 2200 is good for,in table working. If YOU can get OF 1010 jused in good condition, take it. Then OF 1400 [smile].

I don't see much sense in a gizmo like the speed controller. I'd spend the few extra on the variable-speed model router. The PC 690's are decent routers and the VS models do have a soft start.

I have the 690 and also an add-on controller.  I hate the combination.  The 690 stays in a portable Bosch table and is rarely used.  I also have the plunge base that fits the 690 motor.  It never gets used.  The 1400 gets used instead for most tasks.

Thanks again all for the great responses!

That is pretty much what I have come to understand about VS... really is important when using larger bits and varied materials.  Makes me wonder WHY so many fixed speed routers get sold... just for the avarage joe who want to make some baseboards to go with his new hardwood floor?  If that's all you will do with it, I guess the fixed speed are ok.  I just wonder why there are so many sold in the stores...

Perhaps I'll be lucky enough to find a used festool 1010 or 1400 and/or I'll look for a deal on a PC 690 VS motor to mount on a table.  Then I'll be pretty well set for a beginner.

DavidCBaker - thanks for the introduction.  Someday when I get in over my head, maybe we can meet in person and share ideas (probably a one-way exchange  :) )
