Fitting a new dust port on a TS55

Hi Everyone

I have just uploaded my latest "Workshop Notes" video which contains a couple of Festool related items.

One is the fitting of the new dust port to the TS55 which is terribly easy to do.

The other is a mention of Festool storage solutions which I will follow up with at least one video but more likely two once I have assembled all of the kit. I have bought some items from Axminster but several bits were out of stock.

I have had a lot of people ask me about the various Sys Sorts, Sys Combis and tool boxes and so the time is right to produce the videos.

Here is the link to the video:

Hi Peter,

thanks for the new Workshop-Notes! :)

Have you used the TS with a hose attached since upgrading to the new dust port?

I have the new dust port on my TSC and after some use I don't think that it's a significant improvement - with hose attached it quickly and constantly "overrides" the notches/"gearing" and doesn't keep the angle it was originally set to very well.

Is your experience any better?

Kind regards,
Oliver

Hi Oliver

I have not tried it yet but it did feel stiffer to turn. I will report back from time to time to guide other people.

Someone through YouTube tells me that there is a little spring that can pop out when that cover is removed. Can anyone enlighten me on this? If it is a real possibility I will add something about it in another video.

Cheers.

Peter

I changed the port on my ts55r awhile back before these newer twist lock hoses came out. It didn't take long for the port to start dropping down again just like my old one. So a bit of a waste of time really. Maybe the notches wear away or something  I don't know I haven't investigated yet.

Hi Peter

That was me on YouTube i was going to pop the cover off mine & take some pictures of said spring clip but Van is reversed right up against the house & it's Sunday morning so meh LOL but i did find a FOG post
http://festoolownersgroup.com/ask-festool/ts55-where-does-this-metal-clip-part-go/

Its a tiny clip right next to the screw hole for the cover plate right where the clear/green splinter guards clip into the TS55.

Once you're aware of it you will always remember about it when removing the cover plate & it's trivial to put back in place, but would be a right bugger to source & replace if lost which could easily happen especially if done on site  [wink] unlike some peeps who never leave the comfort of their snug warm, very clean & tidy workshops 😁 hehe

Keep up the great videos though they are very informative & well made.

Hi Darren ( [member=63560]Womble[/member] )

Many thanks for that. I will check mine out and mention the potential issue in my next Workshop Notes video.

Cheers

Same here (on my TS75)

I doubt the notches have worn as mine has hardly been used.  Possibly it is a small advance on the original, but I think it is just an inadequate design.

I am starting to wonder how much real-life testing of their products Festool actually conduct.

I am sorry that I am questioning that.

Cheers

I could be wrong, but my understanding is that these "new connectors" were intended for attaching dust bags from the TSC55 not for a Hose.  If true this would explain the experiences people are having as they were not actually designed for the weight of a dust hose.

I have also read elsewhere that the new connectors negatively affects how the TS55/TS75 saw sits in its original insert in the Systainer, if that matters to some people.  Perhaps someone could check this out?

Thanks, Mark

If this new one does not stay put I may well use some superglue to fix it in the upwards position which I like to have at my tracksaw cutting station.

Yes, this is the connector that would come with the TSC55.

I will check out the systainer issue. There is an image on the instruction leaflet that implies that one has to undo the bayonet end piece to get it to fit in the systainer.

The TS75 fits back in the systainer fine.

[but my TS75 originally came in a Classic systainer and I have since swapped the insert over into a T-Loc - I don't know if the latest insert is different]

Cheers

A couple of wraps with just about any kind of tape (around the part where it fits in the slot) will make it pretty much  unmovable and is not as permanent as super glue.  Trial and error as to how many wraps of what kind of tape to make it tight as you want it.

Maybe some Teflon tape from the plumbing isle. Thin and easy to get off without a sticky mess.

You're correct on both counts.

The end connection must be removed on a TS 55 in the original Systainer because it is longer then the original dust port and rests against the wall of the Systainer bowing it slightly and making it difficult to close the lid. It also prevents the TS from nesting properly in the Systainer insert.

I have had the same experience with this fitting and thought it was only happening to me. I could not figure out what was wrong. Makes a lot of sense if it was designed primarily for a dust bag. Apparently it is a misapplication of the part to control hose direction. Although I read a thread on FOG a while back where [member=4105]tjbnwi[/member] indicated that he has retrofitted all his TS 55's with this fitting. He did not mention anything about a problem. Cannot locate that thread.

Thanks [member=48572]Shane Holland[/member]
That is the thread that had me order the dust port fitting from you.
The thread I am referring to was from [member=4105]tjbnwi[/member] actually showing a photo of his TS 55's lined up with that fitting attached.

I wrap silicone tape around the fitting and saw, that makes it cling and very stiff to move.

Found it [member=48572]Shane Holland[/member]
The photo I was referring to was in your referenced thread - see reply #72 that thread - Tom shows pictures of the retrofit - last photo of all his TS's retrofitted

The hose still flops around, wish it was a lot stiffer.

My 55 will not fit in the Systainer properly with the port on the adapter, my 75 does fit in the Systainer with the port on the adapter.

The picture again.
