Fixing new van racking to van

Just bought a brand new Hyundai iload van today and while it is off having the accessories fitted i am planing on how to fit out the interior.

I have worked from the back of a 4wd ute (pick up)for a long time and this is my first ever van.

I have lots of good ideas already from browsing earlier entries however one thing i havent seen mentioned is how the shelving or benches is fixed to the van sides.

Does anyone have suggestions on the method that is best.

I was thinking of screwing plywood to the internal ribs of the van and then screwing everything back to these ribs.Is that a good idea?

That's the way I do it. Also pop a few angle brackets to support shelves etc and screw straight through into the vans frame, but obviously double check the positioning & your screw lengths...

I managed to screw straight through the sliding door on my old van  [cool] Luckily sold it onto a guy who cut the effected panel out and fitted a window, so no big problem.

Thanks for the heads up I am picking the van up tomorrow morning at 10am,and then straight down to buy some plywwod for the floor and wall lining, i have sketched out some plywood sortainers for the first fixtures.

Most likely try to get the floor down and the ply onto the ribs tomorrow.Do you also need some Sika (PU) bond or similar as well or will the screw fixings do?

I have a lot of jobs to catch up on due to issues getting around with the old vehicle so unfortunately the van fitout will be low priority,will post some pics once done,could be weeks away before there is anything worth posting though!!!!

Hi Larso,

Unfortunately I have no help to offer but I'm really keen to see photos of your iload when you get a chance.  I've been seriously considering one at some point, they are offering a 5 year/100k mile warranty/service deal, at least in the UK.  Not to mention the van doesn't look to shabby either.

Do you have plans to put in a false floor?

I know quite a few guys who have them now and all are very happy,the most popular alternative here is the Toyota Hiace but it is several thousand dollars more fror not much extra load space.

I like the fact the iload has a crumple zone and you arent sitting directly on top of the motor as well.

There are plenty of those in the catalogue, but I cannot identify too many of them in the Untidy Shop!

I was close to pulling the trigger on a iLoad.... but ended up staying with my VW Caddy.... it's still young and didn't want the payments every month again.  Decided that money was better spent on Festool.

Enjoy the iLoad Larso, they are a great Van and very popular indeed.  The extra space will be a winner.

also check the lens is clean on you camera could be a on of it's issues since the images are a little cloudy.

Yep its a big call to enter into the lease repayment pond so i understand your keeping the Caddy.

I kept my ute for 9 yrs this time rather than the usual 3-5 and in the meantime saved the cash to buy the iload outright so i dont have to worry about repayments.

I will still save a similar amount to a lease repayment each week (well most weeks) so hopefully i will have enough to upgrade next time lease free as well.

I like having low running costs for my business so i am not forced to compete for work on price just to feed the bank each week.

Had the van one week so far and cant fault it.

Having a bit of a slow start to the fit out as i have a busted up shoulder from playing touch footy but did start cutting the floor sheets on the w/end.

I have the base down and should get another layer down tomorrow creating a 100mm void  between layers to be divided up with 100 x 50 pine for rails,levels and set out tools.

The bottom layer of ply is 7mm and is held down by washers and bolts into the factory tie down points.The second layer will be 12mm ply for a bit of strength when putting items in the back.

Will post another pic or two so this makes sense once i am done.

I had to do some little finishing tasks for  a couple of jobs so needed to pack the van with tools.

The pic shows the scope of the task of fitting out the van,everything in the pic plus a few extra items needs to be stored in racks/shelves and still leave enough floor space for transporting materials etc in the back. [eek]

Slow going but getting somewhere.

So far i have cut the flooring sheets for the base and to create the void today i made some boxes to cover the wheel arches.

I used 12mm ply left from the floor templates so there was a bit of mucking around getting the parts together but the track saw excels at this sort of task.

Forgot that i was 51 not 21 and tried diving from metres out to score the miracle try,unfortunately landed awkwardly and dislocated my shoulder,it went back in ok but what really hurt was the try was disallowed!!!!!!

Oh well seeing the surgeon about re attaching the tendon in 4 weeks time, in the meantime i am on the good drugs just have to remember not to do to much.
