I'm about to start a piece that uses tusk tenons and through mortises, and so for shaping the mortises it seems like getting some floats might be useful.  I have a question about floats then.  They come in push or pull style, and as far as I can figure out, the difference between the two is mostly just preference.  The only time when one is needed over the other is when dealing with issues of grain direction, similar to having, for example, a RH and LH version of a skew plane.  Is that correct?

But if I am in a situation where I can choose to work out of either side of the mortise, I should not be limited by grain direction, right?  I'm just trying to figure out whether I can just get the push version of the floats I'm looking at, or whether I need to get both push and pull for each one.
