What is the relationship between FOG and TalkFestool http://www.talkfestool.com/vb/  ?
These two sites seem to mimic each other and have a lot of the same members, although the latter site is less active. I believe FOG is owned by Festool. What about talkFestool?

Once upon a time, the FOG was owned and administered by Matthew Schenker, a Festool enthusiast who thought it would be a good idea to create a forum for other people who appreciate Festool.

There came a point in the FOG's history (around 2008) where several members didn't like the way the FOG was being operated and they jumped ship and created Talk Festool. In my opinion, there were many very valuable members of the FOG that were lost during that time. This isn't entirely uncommon with internet forums which are compromised of many personalities and opinions. Later, Festool USA took ownership of the FOG (July 2009) and now owns and operates this forum. Talk Festool is still operated independently and is not owned by Festool.

Since Festool took ownership of the FOG, I think the reasons that Talk Festool members left the FOG have been resolved and there's good will between the two forums and its members. Many of the Talk Festool members have returned to the FOG and Talk Festool's participation is not what it once was.

We do our best here to keep things peaceful and cordial for all of our members, and hopefully succeed. We have two great member moderators and let members speak openly about Festool.

Shane

Talkfestool is a great site and they do expand on subject matter in some ways differently than we do.  For instance, if you are interested in a specific brand of tool other than Festool you might find a section of their forum established for discussions regarding those tools.  If you are into handtools you might find information relative to what you are looking for in a different manner than here.

I can tell you as a moderator here and a member in both I have had nothing but a great experience on both and any interactions I have had with the administrative side there have been great.

Peter

Ditto what Shane and Peter said.

I have been a FOG member for a long time (before I was a moderator here) , am a member on tF , and was a moderator on tF.

I think you fellas do a superb job running this site.

Keep up the good work and thanks for creating an outlet to talk about a great product!

Ditto - all the moderators walk a fine line with style and grace. Thank you all.

Talk Festool members are like family. Not that FOG is not, but a lot of the guys at Talk Festool get together every year at WIA. I know quite a few will be going to the Handworks event in Amana Iowa. Anyhow, most members there know each other in real life and they talk like friends next door.

i did notice that. it drives me mad. the thread is about a tool or techneque but then it changes to jimmy dog etc and never really gets going on the topic again.

im not sure why but there is very little new content over there . i check in there now and again (maybe 5-6 times a year ) and still see thesame topics on the first page of each section

on the fog i have often went looking for a thread that was only a few days old and had a hard time finding it

I can assure you that they would love to have more traffic and participation.  I check it daily.  They have asked members for input several times for suggestions and they are willing to listen.  Let them know.  They are a great group.

As someone who is very interested in internet forums - obviously - there is a trend WHICH THE FOG IS NOT EXPERIENCING which is decreased participation.  Forums were amongst the first forms of social interaction on the internet and they grew exponentially.  Then other forms of interaction came along such as Facebook, twitter, YouTube, etc.  The modern format of those applications certainly appealed to many.

In my opinion the FOG has grown because we (the members) continue to primarily focus on one theme - providing help and commentary on Festool products and their usage across all the ranges - from professional usage to hobbyist usage.  Forums have gotten a reputation all over the internet for the flaming and nastiness that can go on in the anonymous world of the internet.  We here have fought that and one of our key mantras is "keep it nice or don't post".

Every time members welcome a new member or give advice or relate experiences you are giving back to those who did it for you.  That is what this Community is all about - YOU and what you put into it.  Constant input encourages more input and spurs thoughts and a continuation of the attraction to others and their input, and ...  That is certainly why I came here years ago and my guess is that is why many others did too.

You make this place what it is.  Don't stop.

Peter

I'll echo what Shane and Peter say.  It's still a great resource and I check in there daily.  I've learned a lot over there (as well as here!)
Another problem they have had, and this may be the reason little new content is posted, is that a while back they lost many photos that are stored in member's photo albums.  So older project posts, and there were some great posts,  have all the photo deets missing.  No one seems to know where they went or how to recover them.  I think it makes people reluctant to post new content, at least for me anyway.

What I love about both these forums, is the fact that you can edit your post regardless of time.  Other forums only allow you to edit your posts within 24 hours.  That's just silly.  I would never post a project thread on SMC for that reason.

Thanks for the kind words, Peter.

Everything said about talkFestool here is true. It was started back in 2008 by 5 FOG members because things on the FOG weren't going too well. As Seth said, he and I worked together as moderators, along with Steve Adams (Qwas).

When Festool USA took over the FOG there was a dramatic change for the better, and the original reason for founding talkFestool disappeared. In 2010, the founding members (with the exception for Fred West) of tF wanted to close it down. Believing it to still be a viable resource for woodworkers, Fred and I took it over and now finance and operate it.

It's true that you never know what you're going to find over there in the way of discussions. Some folks like that, some don't. We have become sort of a close family, but new members are always welcome. We plan a lot of events and have a lot of fun.

As a forum we don't try to compete with anyone. We don't have to, we have no sponsors and don't take donations. We never intended it to be a "for-profit" endeavor. Of course we'd like a little more traffic, but we don't worry too much about it. We plan to be around for a long time either way, if only as a way to keep in conatct and plan events.

All good points, Peter. Another good reason the FOG continues to grow at a time when other forums are losing participation may be that the "green fever" is so contagious, and so many new Festool owners join the ranks every day.

Nonetheless, there has never been another resource for power tool owners of any brand that can compare to the FOG. No matter how it got its start, I'm so glad that it exists. I visit every day, its my information connection to the tools I love so much.

Yeah, I wish I could figure that out. I'm pretty sure the photos are all still in the database, but they have somehow become "unlinked" to the posts. I've even consulted with several VBulletin "experts", but still no solution yet.

None of my own photos have been lost, but I've started uploading photos to another site and linking to them.

Jim, your progression thread on your Roubo is still one of the best on the forum. Fortunately, none of those photos have disppeared so far.

I joined talkFestool before I ever joined the FOG. For reasons only the Internet Gods know about, it came up fast in a search about Festool at the time I was wandering around looking for fellow owners and their experiences.
At talkFestool, we DO tend to get off-topic at times. The mods are a tad[I said TAD, JORAFT wink]]] more forgiving in this aspect about the Forum.
As for the posts seeming to stall, some DO, we just don't have the Traffic of FOG. Some are repeat posts that are YEARS in the piling up, but the heading doesn't change, so one could be fooled by that.  How's Your Weather has been going for awhile, we never shut it down, since the weather is ALWAYS changing.. [embarassed]

a case in point.
in the festool tips and techneques section. there are only 6 threads started or with new posts  this year.

im not complaining thow. there is some great info over there.
i think i will put it back in my tabs and check it out daily for a while

im not sure why i never really got into talk festool. i found both around teh same time.

i love the fog. of all the forums iv visited and had short stays on iv found the fog to be the best and best run. im not on TF enough to coment either way.
that you mods and shane for making this place the forum it is.

i recently had a bad situation on another forum. a member posted about something they built . the thread was months old so i PM them. all i got back was rudness adn insults about being a leech and wanting to stell the ideas and copmlete attacks on me. i reported it to the mods and heard nothing. total joke.
i know  that a situation like that would not be tolerated on here. and would be delt with promptly

Once again, Alan, they are two completely different forums.

Every Festool owner should make it a habit to visit the FOG on a regular basis, it is absolutely the best place to discuss Festool products, and the best place to find current and accurate information about them. I've never seen a question that hasn't been answered or problem that hasn't been solved.

While I would say that the majority of talkFestool members are Festool owners and know quite a bit about them, they like to discuss other things as well. Over the years we've had many complaints about too many discussions not related to woodworking, or threads that wander off topic. But that's just the point, we have very few rules and we don't tell members what to talk about or when, or where. Obviously such a relaxed forum isn't for everybody. As for myself, I can say that I've met more great fellow woodworkers and been on more fun woodworking related "field trips" in the last 4 years than I have in the rest of my life.

Alan, as I said, talkFestool has very few rules. Fortunately, we have such a great group of members that we haven't needed them. But just like the FOG, we don't tolerate rudeness or disrespect. We have 5 mods, and someone is on duty almost 24/7. Just like most forums, we get "bad apples" once in a while, and when we do we quickly "encourage" them to go elsewhere.
