FOG From iPod Touch, iPhone?

Good morning,
I'm aware that an increasing number of people may be viewing the FOG from one of Apple's new devices, so I'm interested in hearing from those members who do this.  I'm looking into ways to optimize this site for portable devices.  Also, I'm checking out ways to create a "portable" version of the site, the way sites like Amazon, Google, and others do.
Who here checks the FOG from their iPod Touch or iPhone?  And do you have any suggestions?
Stay in touch,
Matthew

PS: This message was composed from my iPod Touch.

i have both the ipod touch & iphone.  i am always frequenting the FOG from one of the devices wether at home or on the go.  i don't mind the full site since it is on the safari browser when i am on wi-fi, but i think a mobile version could be a bit swifter for those on a slower network (and without wi-fi capabilities).

I am checking in from my iPhone right now.  I do it multiple times a day and always over the celluar network.  Generally it runs pretty well.  The only problem really is that if the thread has a bunch of photos it will take to long to load to be worth waiting for.  It might be nice to have a function where you could view one comment at a time.  I am often checking in on threads that I am following and all I want to see is the most recent comments without waiting for the whole thread to load.  It would be a good idea to make some accomodations for mobile users, I am a contractor and this thing is what I use for 90 percent of my Internet time now.  I think more and more people will be making the shift.

Oh,  you won't be sorry with the iBook either.  Both my wife and I have been running macs for over 10 years.  I am a designer/builder/contractor and she works for the department of the interior, we both use a variety of different programs from cad to statistical analysis software and we have never had a problem.  I have never met someone who switched over and then went back.

Matthew,

I view the FOG on my I phone and don't have an issue. It works well for me but I may be more tolerant than some. When people quote and include the posted photos, it does slow down some.

I check occasionally on my iPhone. I have no problems with the full web site.

When I am offered a mobile version of a web site I generally decline because the
experience is worse than the full version.

Good Morning,
It's good to hear from people who access the forum from their mobile devices.  I'm still new at using such devices myself, so I need to hear from members when it comes to possible enhancements to the forum.

Personally, I find that accessing the full version of the forum works fine from the iPod Touch -- better than I had thought!  Perhaps there is no reason for a mobile version.

Thanks,
Matthew

Matthew,

I have been using my Iphone as my main way of viewing the FOG since I became a member.  It works great.  When there are pictures or things I need to look at full size, then I fire up the Macbook Pro at home.
Keep up the good work you do.

Matthew -

You might check outhttp://apploop.com/

It's a VERY simple app generator for the iPhone.  Not yet released, but since you have RSS feeds on the site, it's something to play with.

I just looked at that page, but I can't figure out exactly how they make it work.

I know its a bit of topic but I Feel its not worth starting another topic just for a simple question.

Well my Parents are going to Las Vegas and where wondering if it would be cheaper to buy the Iphone 4 from their instead of the UK.

So...

Is it cheaper??!?!
Do you have to get it on contract or can you just get the phone?!?!?
Is the phone locked can it be used in the UK with no problems with full features?!?

Thank you in advance.

I don't think that it work out positively for you to buy in the US and then take back to the UK for the following reasons.

You would have to buy it at either 499, or 599, or 699 USD for either the 8gb, 16gb, or 32gb models respectively.  You would have to sign up for a two year ATT contract here.  Then you would have to cancel that contract at a cost I believe to be 375 USD less 10 USD for every month that the contract was in place.

The international usage plan costs for the iPhones bought here and then used internationally are pretty outrageous.  From what I understand, the costs for the services are more reasonable in the UK because of numerous carriers and competition.  The phone prices, adapted to currency and taxes, etc are very similar.

This might not be what you wanted to hear, but...

It's my understanding that phones are like razors or printers.

With razors, they give away the razor to sell you outrageously priced blades. With printers, they sell a lot of technology very cheap to get you to buy ink/toner later.

The phone is sold at little profit and sometimes a loss with a contract for service - the service is very profitable. I doubt that you could buy a phone without a contract and come out ahead because you still need the service anyway.

Dont know where you live but here in the UK you can buy phones SIM free so no service nothing just the phone.  So you then can get a pay as you go sim card or get a Mobile free Contract instead so its just a contract without a mobile.

You can get an iphone 4 and have it unlocked. Then you can insert any SIM card for almost any network, including in the UK.

But there are snags, and here is one of the biggest. If you update the software at a later date, you may reverse the unlocking and have to redo it.

Many people in my office got unlocked iphones (the 3GS version) and most regretted it in time. Many apps did not work properly or they were simply unable to use them at all.

So my recommendation would be to "go legal" and get it with a contract in the UK, even if it costs you a little extra. It is not worth the hassle. I used an unlocked Sony camera phone for a couple of years, with no problems, but I only used it for calling and taking photos. With the smartphones like Blackberries and Iphones, it is a very different proposition.

Hope this info helps you decide one way or the other.
Richard.

P.S. A quick glance at ebay suggests the unlocked iphone 4 is going for about $1000 which seems nuts.

The iphone's browser is amazing but I have to say after buying an HTC Desire, I have to say Android's browser is much better!

Thank you very much!  I think we will be going Legal as you say!

I use Tapatalk to read & post to the forum. My main gripe with it is that for some reason uploading pictures to the forum for hosting does not seem to work (all images are sent by default to Tapatalk's image server for hosting and it's an $1.99 in-app extra purchase to do more than 20 pics this way) and my second gripe is that one cannot use the emoticons through Tapatalk in any reasonable way (you can't see them but only the tags in parentheses [big grin] nor can you input them otherwise but knowing the tags off by heart and typing them in.

Otherwise the app is brilliant.

I also use Tapatalk...it's a very generic forum style app, but it does it's job and loads rather fast!  I appreciate the larger text so that I don't always have to pinch & zoom!  Also, you can't upload photos through browsers on mobile devices, so the only viable option thus far is Tapatalk.  Unfortunately there's not a free version or trial, but it's only a few dollars on the app store!

Hit me up if you want to know more about the app!
