Just a tip, which I should have thought to mention before. On Windows, you can hit Control+F5 in your browser and it will force the browser to reload the page without using the cache. Sometimes this can fix problems. I'm sure there's a similar key combination on Mac.

Another thing that can cause problems in Firefox is some malicious spam, or advertising add-ons that you don't know have been added to Firefox without your permission. This can happen when going to some sites, and you won't know until things start slowing down, or you have problems like the OP stated at the beginning of this thread.
The worst one's are the add-ons that send your browsing data to other places in order to target advertising to you. This is different from cookies. A lot of these add-ons, especially one that is called "Savings-Slider" or similar, sends all of your page requests through their system first, and then continues to the page you were attempting to reach.
Here's how to REMOVE any add-ons...either those you installed, or those that were maliciously installed.
On the Firefox menu bar, click Tools, then Add-ons. You will get the page as shown below. Look carefully at the extensions that are currently installed on Firefox. Disable or Remove any that you don't want, or are unsure of their function. You CAN'T hurt Firefox here if you remove something that you're not sure of. These do NOT have a base function in Firefox, and are only extensions. (The ones in the picture are those that I personally find very useful and have kept, but I have also regularly eliminated others that were not installed by me).

One more thing that helps, though not always.... See the second line of my signature below!! [big grin]
