What would reassure me is if the management described what went wrong and how they went about correcting the problem.

I simply avoided the site during its period of malaise.  I suspect others did so too.

Took a backup, sudo apt-get, cleared some cache, rebooted the servers, and configured a few more resources just in case...

Not really...a little bit compared to the response over the weekend, but it's not close to normal. FWIW, I noticed it starting to slow down on Friday morning and it went down hill from there.

For instance, once I posted this reply, it took almost 20 seconds for the screen to refresh.
