Just wanted to point out for those of you clamoring for a VAC-SYS and fretting over it's "UL issues", there is an alternative from
the land of lutherie...

Nothing more challenging than trying to get a good grip on a delicate guitar body while finishing the binding/purfling, etc.

SO there is this solution, which I think is similar to the VAC-SYS:

Guitar body vacuum clamp

That is an interesting looking clamp.

Here is a thread from Talkfestool that shows a different one with interchangeable heads.  Another clamp

That one looks like a real contender!

Is it just my thinking or is setting up a vacuum system on a bench a bit redundant? ... Wouldn't they suit an island position with a slightly lowered mounting point?

(I think we're just programmed to think "vice on a bench")

Kev,

One of the things that I love about even my cheap system is that the workpieces can be quickly attached and released.  I love using mine with the MFT when using the Domino or sanding.  It takes just seconds to move something around.

I agree about the height issue.  But I guess that stooping over is eliminated.  [big grin]

I don't have a vac system but as someone with serious lower back issues raising the work piece above normal MFT/work bench height is a big plus to me.

Fair enough ... but if you're dealing with a bench + vac sys + box shape - it could end up way too tall. To me, some independently standing - but with height adjustment - would then be perfect !

These things are pretty cool and I have been researching them.  The link that Peter provided is another German manufacturer (Schmalz) and the heads all look very similar to the Vac Sys heads and configuration and the company.  They offer different clamps -- ones that can be powered with a compressor and others that require a vacuum pump.  Of course it is blue and does not come in a Systainer, but it seems like a viable alternative since the VacSys will not make it over here.  Below is a link to the company's site:
