Framing Up a Large Closet--Book Suggestion?

I'm building out my office. It's the second level of a detached garage. A large, rectangular 800 sq ft space. I want to build a large closet into it and would like a book to explain some of the concepts. I build small boxes for jewelry. Would you know of a book that would fit that description? It would ideally include something on the framing portion. We live way out in the country and codes won't be an issue.

Gary Katz has written a lot about framing to finishing techniques and is a frequent seminar leader.

I'd also look at Youtube for content videos there.

I'll suggest that you contact a local California Closets franchise to get a designer to work with you on the design.  They can give you guidance on dimensioning, necessary clearances and other items to provoke your thoughts.  Between you and the designer, you could come up with a very functional and well-appointed closet.  I suggest California Closets because they're the top end of the semi-custom closet providers.

You could do it any number of ways, but the simplest is probably going to be 2x4s 16" on center.  You can use nails, but modern screws are also nice (if slower and more expensive).  I don't own a framing nailer, so I either hammer it or use GRK r4 screws.

Depending how you plan to fit it out, you may want to add some blocking between the studs to provide more surfaces to screw things into.

This is Carpentry had a good article about fitting out closets using melamine.  Gary Katz has a book called Finish Carpentry: Efficient Techniques for Custom Interiors.  I think it discusses closets a little bit.

Sparktrician's suggestion of checking out california closets is a good one.  A lot of these shops aren't doing anything that special, but they do it all day long, so they know all the ins and outs and considerations.  Good to see what's out there.

Check out Marc Sommerfeld on youtube for cabinet builds.  You can make them any size.  I have cut open the closets in my home and put in 8' cabinets with drawers and doors.  I usually make them 36" wide and use face frame construction.  The tongue and groove method that Sommerfeld uses makes them very solid units.  Looking forward to your project.  Bill
