Freud Stacked Router Bit Setup

Hi All,

I'm looking for some advice on whether it's correct to use a Freud Stacked router bit in a certain way. Specifically I can't work out if a bearing must be used, or whether it's only needed for handheld uses.

I want to space two cutters 5/16 apart so I can create a tongue in a piece of 1/2" plywood. To space them this far apart I don't think I have room for the bearing. But I plan to use this setup on a router table, so the fence gives me the depth control that a bearing does.

Ideally I would stack a spacer, a 1/8 cutter, spacers to give me 5/16 clearance, a 1/8 cutter, a spacer and then the nut.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Ben

I do not have the Freud slot cutting set. I have CMT & Whiteside slot cutting sets that I use for T&G a lot.

It should be okay.  I would just be careful that you have enough spacers to tighten the stack down properly, but not so many that you don’t have enough threads engaged in the nut (or it may back out in use).  All the threads in the nut should be engaged.

Thank you, that makes sense!

I also have the CMT slotting set, uber adaptable...it is great.
