Ohhhhh, I thought this was a hypothetical exercise. I would never encourage someone to actually break a law. [laughing]

Hey guys I don't think it is fair to ask someone if they would conspire to defraud the tax department in the UK on a open forum? Just my opinion FWIW.

I always try to avoid my opinions, unless I'm with my close friends. I much prefer to only discuss things that I can verify and substantiate.

With that said, I have been following Eiji's work for quite a while and I consider it virtually nonpareil. Of course, everyone has an equal and also, a better. But for purposes of discussion, this work by Eiji is absolutely superb, IMHO.

I have never conversed with him or traded messages, emails or anything with him and therefore, I don't know why I am doing this... I look at Eiji as an Artist in Multiple Materials. And, a REALLY DARN GOOD ONE! Please forgive the brief shouting, mod's...

I am occasionally involved in international business deals and it is not, in my humble opinion (notice no acronym), appropriate to ask anyone, that isn't a hardened exporter, to cross the lines of propriety.

If the receiver of something, that they want to cheat on, wants to cheat, the onus should be on them to cheat. That's my opinion. I hesitate, as I stated earlier, to put my opinions in a debate.

In this case, I feel like I might be protecting an Artist. I hope I can.

Tom

Wow Tom, thanks for the kind words and protection.

Tom,

Agree with you 100%. A thoughtful response well stated.

Sorry to hear so many are willing to allow government to restrict their personal freedoms and go along with the program.
If X wants to buy 12 from someone stateside, ship them to the EU and sell them, then yes he should pay the duties/taxes whatever.
If X wants to order one or two units for his personal use, screw the Man and the duties. Government should have no place in that transaction.

That's the way things are over here - we pay VAT (value added tax) on pretty much everything we buy. The only things that are VAT free are things classed as 'essentials' - food (but not if it's pre-prepared), kids clothing, books, and one or two other bits I can't remember. Oh, and gas/electric are at a reduced rate of 5%.

Here in the UK VAT is 17.5% - in the rest of Europe I think it varies from country to country, but in Germany it's 19%. Much higher than your 'sales & use' taxes.

Don't worry Jonny,

The powers-that-be are already mumbling about the VAT over here, it's a cash-cow that is irresistable to them.  Of course it will only start at 1% in order to get our budget in order, but will soon swell to 15-19% once we get "used" to it.  Sorry to get so [off topic], but I'm with Holzacker, there are too many layers of taxes...

Jon

P.S, I wish I a)had the money for a couple of Eiji's planes, they're beautiful and b) had the skills to put them to good use.  I'm afraid I would put it on my mantle and just look at it.

Great work Eiji.

I have purchased many golf clubs over the years from the US. Yes you will have to pay import duty and VAT on any item over a certain amount.

This will help:

http://www.dutycalculator.com/calculation/

It is a pain if you are buying one off's for personal use....it also explains why things are so much more expensive here in the shops than in the US.

If things are sent by Fedex you will have a bill sent to you after recepit of items as Fedex pay your taxes and duty and then get it back from you...charging for the pleasure aswell!

I have heard of many ways around it, would suggest it is not cricket to ask the vendor to colude, I have heard of amiable third parties returning "goods after repair" which worked well.

I am interested too. Just not sure how quarantine would handle the wood products and what costs would be involved there.
