Just to make sure that nobody gets the wrong impression here, Gary gave me permission to video snippets and not the whole program.  The quality of my videos could have presented a poor representation of the high quality of his presentations.  Gary produces excellent videos.  Mine that day were not.

You should always request permission prior to making a video.

None of this is directed at Ken.  This is just a general statement for our many readers.

Peter

Good point, Peter!  Just so everyone knows, I am not posting the videos anywhere.  They are just for my use.  I watched a sample of each last night and they turned out better than I thought, especially the audio.

I think there are at least a few youtube videos about coping crown this way. I have this accessory on by Bosch barrel grip jigsaw and it works a treat. I don't think it would be very easy to have the saw hooked up to dust collection while doing it though.

Gary had no problem using the Trion with dc hose while coping crown and chair rail, but keep this in mind.  He showed a better way to cope with the jigsaw.  He mounts the molding in a homemade adjustable clamping miter box so he's looking down at the profile's length to cope like when mounting it in position on a miter saw.  Much easier using the jigsaw that way and having greater control over it removing material.  He demonstrated when to use a pulling motion of the jigsaw and when to use a pushing motion to increase the ability to control the cutting action.

You learn a lot of these great tips/tricks at his shows and on his videos.
Here's Gary's CCF article, an early one using a Bosch. http://www.garymkatz.com/ToolReviews/collins_coping_foot.html
The CCf needs a minor modification to fit the Trion and Dave Collins will do it for you.
BTW there was no dust extractor hooked to the Trion Gary was using yesterday (had a front row seat) :)

Well, I could have sworn seeing it hooked to the CT like all the other tools he was using and hearing the CT come on with the Trion.  When I have time I look through all the video, but it's hard to argue with your point of view.

I went through the videos and Steve C. is correct.  Although it was difficult to see since a guy in a white shirt in the front row was blocking the view of Gary coping on the MFT most of the time while I was shooting and when shooting the large screen, it was a little too far away and washed out, but on occasion the Trion popped up and there was no hose attached to it.  Also had a duh moment while looking at the picture I took of the Trion that's posted here --- no dc hookup on it as the bottom guts were removed to put the Collins Coping Foot on.  Back to the dummy corner I go...

Odd why you never mentioned you were going to be there or introduced yourself.

Hey Ken,
1) I usually hang at the Contractors Club and that was our little group in the front row.
2) I was wearing a blue plaid shirt, so it wasn't me :)
3) Gary had so many Festool tools, cords and hoses, actually realizing what was hooked
to what was a challenge even in the front row !
4) I had thought about getting a Trion for my CCF but was informed that the dust collection
feature was defeated by removing the shoe and working upside down. So I'm sticking with a Bosch 1582 I rebuilt.
The only downside is the Festool blade Gary recommended may not fit it.

I see we're both in there, but the guy cut off most of the hot Liquid Nails girl just showing part of the top of her head.  [big grin]

I cope everything with my Collins foot on an old bosch jigsaw.

You really have to make the clamping box to keep the moulding in position, it makes it sooo much easier.

I can fly through my copes.

I had thought about attending but I and my crew saw Gary at Mavic earlier this year so we passed.

Funny story..

During his presentation, Gary was using a pin nailer to hold a couple of pieces of crown together.  He missed the trim and the nail went directly into his finger.  Like the trouper he is, he put a dab of 2P10 on it and kept on going. :o

I guess you had to be there...  [unsure]

Anybody going to the carpentry clinic tomorrow in Succasunna, NJ?  If you are, maybe I'll see you there.

I think I was using some other brand of gun at that show and wasn't used to the safety. I remember shooting one nail into the front row right before shooting my finger. One of the guys in the front row looked at me with his mouth open: "What the...!" But no one saw that. That's the one bad thing about using WindsorOne...you can see the blood ten rows away.

Thanks Gary for the boring, safer show.  [big grin]

By the way, that new tool I showed you has come in.  I just have to go to Delaware to pick it up and I'll do a little video of it on here.

Just don't mention what it is yet!
