We've been on quite a roll lately with new products from small time inventors.  Here's another, a generator tent that still allows for breathability, refuel access all while maintaining portability.  Pretty cool and is certainly a "why didn't I think of that!?"

Wonder how it would hold up in hurricane conditions...  [big grin]

I own a beautiful 6,500W Generac I grabbed off the inbound delivery truck at Graingers last October, purchased with a no-return policy. Loaded it into the SUV and moments later got the call that we were evacuating ahead of Sandy's landfall. We had planned to shelter in place. Still in the unopened box.

I never did figure out how I was going to run it and keep it dry during a storm, but at the time we were only really expecting a moderately bad storm and it never occurred to me that our yard would get 3' of water. Still have not come up with a solution, probably won't until the next storm hits.

After the storm passed and the power didn't come back on I ran mine under a pop-up tent when rain threatened.

I think I remember pictures of your shed. Do you have a lot of things behind the shed and between the fence? Could extend the roof of the shed, build a tall base for it and nestle it up under the overhang. Then run some underground conduit and gas line (those things are natural gas right?) and bam it's hidden, up off the ground and out of the weather for the most part.

In the 1930s when I was a child every home we visited outside New York City proper had a back-up generator. Back then those were commonly called "Delco" although some might have been a different brand.

My parents had a weekend/summer place far out on Long Island. It was near the end of the power poles, which had only recently been extended that far east. So there was a large wooden building between the main house and the stables which was a generator plant. Since Dad no longer employed a generator operator, there was a nearly-new Delco for emergency stand-by power for the house and stables. The other outbuildings and the house where the polo pony trainer lived had small sheds which were nicknamed "Delco Doghouses".

Those structures did their thing protecting the generators from the weather. I remember once seeing the trainer's generator being repaired. The doghouse had simply been lifted off and stored out of the way. When I looed at it closely I saw metal bales attached through which wooden poles could be placed for the lift and carry.

We don't have anything between the shed and fence but it is only 3'. Probably enough space but it will be tough to service.

Unfortunately that is probably the only area we have to use. There is only a 3' setback on that side of the property and 7' on the other side, but this is our access walkway. 20' total backyard (50' wide) and all that space is spoken for - I got senior management approval to build the pizza oven next year.

Hopefully I can build the Delco doghouse soon...
