Give me an excuse to come up with version 2 for this MFT sysport

I built this rolling cabinet for my MFT a year ago and it works really quite well, but I'm looking for an excuse to build a new version with some minor tweaks.

The cabinet raises the MFT to the same height as if it was standing on its own legs (it might be short by a couple of mm, but shims at the caster plates would tweak that).  I carefully designed the cabinet so all 4 sides are flush with the edges of the MFT so you can do vertical clamping with no interference.  There is a vertical wall going lengthwise through the unit for strength.  The MFT sits on top and is not fastened down at all, but dowels at the corners prevent it from sliding at all.  So it's rock solid, but you can just grab the MFT and go.  It has 3 22" drawer slides in front that extend out enough for the systainers to clear the front.  There are 2 small drawers on the side for Qwas dogs and other accessories.  Double locking casters that glide very nicely, but lock in place so it feels totally solid.  Everything is joined together with pocket holes and you could sit on it without a wiggle.

I figure the parts cost me right about $340 (changed to reflect 3 sheets of plywood in the cost).  If someone is willing to give me that and come get it in Danbury CT that'll give me an excuse to build another one.  The main thing I'd do differently next time is to use the more expensive full extension drawers slides which would recover enough room to put drawer slides on both sides instead of just one - not a big deal, I'm just being picky, so this could make someone very happy.  Of course if multiple people are interested the highest bid wins.  This unit is one big piece so a truck would be required.

To be clear the MFT or any tools is NOT included, this is just the cabinet, drawers, casters, and saw holder.

First, that cabinet looks mighty fine and if I was within 200 miles of you, I'd be handing you $250. Unfortunately I'm 4 times that distance away from you.

There is one thing in your pictures and description just begging to be changed, and I don't think anyone else has done it. The Saw Holder on the MFT needs to be removed and either a fold up shelf added to the cart or the cart extended to perform the same task. I can see a nice small shelf that hinges up to hold the saw and hinges down for easy maneuverability.

One of the biggest design constraints I used was that the cabinet can't extend past the edge of the MFT table and should in fact meet it as closely as possible.  The idea being that I might want to vertically clamp on any side.  In practice I have only done this on the front side.  This saw holder has an edge so the saw can't just slide off of it and with the TS55EQ on the shelf it comes to a little below the top of the table so it doesn't interfere with moving the stock, but it's as high as possible so it doesn't make you bend over more than necessary.  I hardly ever remove it, but it comes off in seconds with a quick loosening of the knobs.

I'm not actually in any special rush to sell it.  If I knew for sure I was going to be able to sell it easily in the future I'd use it to build its replacement maybe over my Christmas vacation.

I like it!!  You have inspired me with a future project.  Nice and open where you can see what you are looking for.  I'm going to assume there is about 3 to 4 sheets of ply in this.  Also like the cabinets in the background.  In 2004 I built a 28 by 40 foot garage to get belongings out of storage and closer to home.  Have built 6 cabinets in the garage for auto, electrical, garden, and other dedicated items.  (Dedicated cabinets are about the only way I can ever find what I'm looking for).  Considering rolling cabinets for the back wall to give me more open space for future projects and doiing away with previoously built ones.  Nice job on your project and thought process in design!  Looking forward to version 2.

You've made me realize that when I was calculating my cost for this piece I only allowed for one sheet of plywood and that's obviously wrong.  Last night I was looking for the plans I made, but didn't find them.  I'll have to measure it up and figure it out.  Still willing to dell it for cost, but I want to make sure it's an accurate cost.

I measured it up and put the result into MaxCut Pro and it says it could be built with 2 sheets of 3/4 ply.  So that brings the cost of this unit to $280.

Any takers?  I have one interested but not confirmed at the revised price.

I built this a couple of years ago. Very similar arrangement to what you have, but I added a flip over table to the end to double as an out feed table for my table saw. When not used for that purpose, I flip it over to use my Kapex. I have a piece of 8020 extrusion that I attached to a couple of dogs to act as a fence. It's easy to clamp a stop on the extrusion too. It has been a very convenient setup for me.

I just finished all the joinery for my second version, nothing is glued together yet because I have to take it apart to drill all the drawer mounting holes.  It'll have systainer storage on the front and back, and on the end there will be 4 small drawers for accessories above a small area to hold parallel guides.  If all goes well I'll have this thing glued together and up on wheels tomorrow, then it's just a matter of making the drawers and sliding shelves to put the systainers on.  I'm planning to drill the holes 16mm apart vertically so I'll be able to waste as little space as possible and hopefully put each systainer on its own shelf.

Would you post some photos of your tool storage over your bench and how it was done? Really nice - both!

I like that setup. I have steered clear of having a SCMS in the shop due to space limitations but it may work to have one mounted to the flip top.

In the spring I plan to build a new cart for my MFT and one other cart about 28 by 42, which is all the room I can spare.

Thanks for the idea.

That's great to see. I was planning exactly the same idea for my MFT to help me with more storage and mobility. I saw a rolling cart in one of the woodworking magazines and thought the MFT would make a great top for it. I am also thinking about buildig another top to fit the cart, so that I could take the MFT off and add my other top that would match the same "top of work surface" to give me an even greater work surface when needed. I just thought of an idea!! make the top that the MFT sits on, the extra top that just needs to flip over. This gives me a place to store it when not in use.
Thanks for the pictures. Gives me more design ideas.
I was actually sketching up my design today on paper. Glad that I am a draftsman by trade, cause I needed to use the eraser to revise my design after seeing yours. [smile]
I am adding more drawers to hold many of the goodies that I have. I now want to make a cubby to hold systainers of tools being used at present time, instead of setting them on the floor.

If you wanted to bring this to me in Minnesota I'd be all over it... but since that would be absurd, best of luck finding somebody!

The version two of my MFT Sysport is now functional with the exception of the Systainer slides and side drawers - I now have my MFT sitting on top of it instead of the old version.  In the new version I created a space 400mm high and about 9" deep for 4 accessory drawers, but when I actually cut the pieces for the 4 drawers they just seemed too deep for how big they are, so I'm making a design change, now they'll be 6 drawers about 120mm high.  I'm not sure I actually need 6 drawers for stuff, but what the heck it'll look better.  I also decided to drive myself nuts and edge band everything on the new cabinet which is way overkill for workshop stuff, but I got a MFK 700 for Christmas so of course everything had to be edge banded...  Hopefully the side drawers will be done and mounted this weekend, then I can work on the pull out shelves for the Systainers.

Yeah, everyone is looking for an excuse to visit Minnesota this week...    [eek]

Not here in Texas, my plywood is not frozen!!! still.....ply..able.....pun intended!!!

hahaha.  Yeah, yeah, yeah.  It IS a little sick when I realize that 0 degrees feels warm to me.  There must be something wrong about that :)

Well, since you are sadly not able to make the drive (shocking), I will have to stick to gleaning what I can from your pics for inspiration for whatever I come up with!

I'll be happy to share the plans with whoever wants them.  Just wait a little longer while I screw them up - for some reason I seem to have forgotten to cut straight the first time on this project, fortunately I've been mistakenly cutting things big the first time so I can cut again and fix it.  I'm usually better than this.

Maybe you can sell plans like Paulk did for his workbench.  If  memory serves me correctly, he was getting about $10 or so per copy and there are a lot of MFT's out there.  It would give folks things to think about and modify to there own design.  I would be interested.

In my computer field I'm an open source kind of guy, so I'm inclined to just give my MFT plans away, though I'm happy to accept any money you feel like sending me.

I've finished the side accessory drawers and it's down to making a new side saw holder (the one pictured is from the old cabinet) and the sliding shelves for the Systainers.

Here are some pictures of the new unit.  I'm quite happy with how the side drawers came out, at first I was only going to have 4 of them, but 2 drawers stacked in 400mm ended up seeming oddly deep.  In the pictures you can see that it has Systainer storage on both sides.

I should also mention that I'm using Steelex D2608 3-Inch double locking casters that are 100mm from floor to top of plate: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000DD1EE

I've become quite addicted to these particular wheels.

For the Systainer slides I used Shop Fox D3029 14-Inch Full Ext Drawer Slide : http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0000DD4A7

For the end accessory drawers I used Amico Pair 9" Full Extension Ball Bearing Telescopic Drawer Slides: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B008FZON3C
