Google+

No invite yet, but baaed on what I know I like the approach over facebooks method.
Also, call me gullible, but I trust Google more.

The reason I started this thread is that I was curious to see what people thought of the product.  My wife is a lawyer at Google, and her office mate quit to go work at Facebook, only to come back after less than 2 weeks.  I can say with great certainty that you are correct in your assumptions.  Besides, from a logical standpoint, it makes perfect sense: Google is the leader in search, and it makes exactly no sense for them to share you information, in fact, it hurts their business model to do so.  Facebook, on the other hand... that's one of their primary ways of generating revenue.

I'm a huge fan of the fact that I can put information up on Google+, and that I don't have to blast it out to everyone that is on an arbitrary "friends list".  Certain information just isn't appropriate to share with certain people, and it's nice to feel like I can share those types of things in ways that aren't "odd"...

Yup.

Consider how many things Facebook "automatically" did over the years.  Buzz is nothing.

Fact is Google is (for now) keeping + open such that the content I share there I can easily move and remove.  I don't think people understand just how much they are locked into FB and their draconian policies of who owns what.

i dont know much about facebook . could you elaborate a bit. maybe explain how google + is less draconion and how you are less locked in with google+. try to keep it on topic if you can or at least from the perspective of google + [wink]

In Google+, you can export all your information.  You could do that before closing the G+ account then import it back if you create another account.

FB's security is a joke; even minimal security would exceed what FB has today.  For something interesting, read about FireSheep.  While maybe being able to have someone spoof you in an internet cafe on Facebook isn't a big deal in the financial sense (unlike sidejacking your banking session), that Facebook is working on its own economy (buying and selling within the FB ecosystem) is more concerning since you'd load your FB wallet using real money.

Well, been on for a few days now.  I like it much better than facebook as far as implementation.
Obviously the majority of value is in the people on FB, but if everyone came over to G+ I'd only use that.

If anyone wants an invite, pm me your email address.

I was wondering how many FOG member have Google + account. I have a circle just for Festool owners. But there are only two Festool owners in it, Paul and Chris. Who else here has a Google+ account? [big grin]

So I put a public posting on my G+ stream. If you view it, you can comment on it for us to locate your G+ accounts; once a few of us get a circle going, it's easy for others to get names from those circles.

If you don't have a G+ account, but have a GMail account, you'll likely be given the chance to join, which is really painless with a GMail account.  Otherwise, if you want an invite, PM either Greg or me.

My main woodworkers circle is close to 62 members so far and I haven't been really active at gleaming other members from my woodworking friends.  It could grow pretty quickly.  You can also get G+ updates via email so it isn't like another site to visit.

Okay. I've sent invites to those that PM'd or emailed me.  If you didn't provide me an email address I sued the one listed on your profile here.

Cheers,
Jeff

I think it will be fun do to some hangouts from the shop.  10 shopcams all at once.  Might be 0 productivity, though...
