I'm rebuilding a wood stocked cane mill.  Got 2" x " 15" white oak stock and cut to 50" long.  Each piece weighed 62 lb which I figure is like 72 lb / cu ft.  Seasoned white oak ought to be 47 lb per cube. I painted every surface with cottonseed oil and drilled both ends and bolted in 1/2" all threads rods.  Ends are thirsty.  I stacked them flat on concrete in 70 F basement with 1/4" spacers.  Sorghum ripens in 7 weeks.  The log was sawed less than a month old and I picked wood up day after sawed.

2 pieces will be bolted together to make 4" x 15" x 50" base for 2 each 165 lb rollers.  2 more for top and some leftovers will make 12 1/2" uprights held in place by 5/8" all threads bolts at the 4 corners.

Am I nuts to think I can work this wood in time to mill cane this year in the hope that all those bolts will hold it in place while it cures?

Nuts...

Probably need a year or likely two to dry that Oak enough.

If you can get some Hemlock in that or even larger dimentions you can probably successfully use it green.

Best,
Todd
