grinder versus Festool rotex

I am interested in this answer too as I am getting ready to embark on my own Maloof inspired build.

Vlies is going to behave much differently from other abrasives because of the very open surface. So, it's difficult to accurately compare grit for grit.

If you need to go up that high in grit, it's possible to stick with Granat the whole way through the grit progression since it goes up to 1500. In higher grits: 240, 280, 320, 360, 400, 500, 800, 100, 1200, 1500.

If hand sanding is required, I would highly recommend that you check out our Granat hand sanding sheets which have a foam backing, available in grits up to 600.

Due to the small size of a lot of the pieces, I was planning on sticking with the RO-90 - and it looks like the Granat stops at 400 grit for that sander.

Nope, it goes all the way to 1500 for the RO 90. I'll admit I'm a little behind getting the website up-to-date with the higher grits which were only recently added.

Thanks! When I looked at the festoolproducts.com (toolnut) and McFeeley's, they only had up to 400 (and still don't have it on their sites, so it must be pretty new). Now that you have provided the item numbers, I'm sure I can order some.
