Rotex 150 Dust Collection

Hi folks. I recently broke down and bought the Rotex 150 to go along with my ETS 150/5 and a couple of other sanders. Of course, now I’m asking myself what took so long to purchase it! I just did a glue up for a 5 1/2’ x 3’ black walnut table top and I have to say that this sander is making easy, beautiful work of it.

My question involves the dust collection. All the boards in the glueup were first planed and jointed, so i had a pretty good finish to start with. I’ve started with the RO-150 in Rotex mode with 60 grit Rubin. It’s doing a very nice job and other than some modest walnut residue on the outside of the abrasive and some on the pad, it’s collecting dust very well, as Festool always does. I have a CT – 22 extractor and at this stage of the sanding I’m running it close to full speed. I’ve noticed that the suction that I can feel on the face of the paper is a lot less than I would feel with my ETS 150/5 with the same setting on the vac.  The 6 inch sanding disc is lined up correctly with the holes on the pad.

Not complaining. Part of it may be the fact that the RO-150 jetstream pad has more holes than the pad that’s on my ETS 150/5. I should also mention that I have a good inventory of the original eight hole plus one abrasives. My understanding, however, is that virtually all of the suction takes place through the eight main holes around the circumference and that all of the smaller holes help with the jetstream effect to move the dust to the outside and keep the abrasive cooler. If I have this information wrong, please correct me.

Just curious for any comments that any of you may have. Thanks in advance.

I run my ro150 with a ct26 and it is backed off to about half vacuum. I think it actually collects better that way. I also start with the lowest grit needed and do a few passes then switch from Rotex to orbital and make a few passes before going to the next grit up. Works a dream on big slabs. All my abrasive is newer with the extra holes so I can't help there but I would try backing off the vacuum a bit and see how it goes. I don't like to feel the sander sucking itself down. I find that actually makes the orbital mode harder to control and doesn't draw as well.
