Hey! :)

After being on the look out for a used Hammer A3 31 for quite a long time, I finally found one for sale "only" 4,5 hours drive from where I live yesterday. The seller wants the equivalent to £1750/$2354 for it, and a new one from the dealer would cost £ 2840/$3819 with a 7 hour drive to pick it up, and long delivery time. So I think I might buy it. I've read lots of reviews of the machine, and watched videos on youtube, but I've noticed this is a older model.

Can anyone tell me the major differences between the new and old model, and what you think about these?

I had a 2008 model, the main differences are the availability of the Silentpower cutter head and the table design. I believe on the newer machines the tables lift as a single unit where the old version lifted as singles with one on an angle. Nice little machine for the money. If you get the M42 knives give a great cut and last a lot longer then the HSS standard knives.

It turns out this machine is 3~ 400V, and I only have 1~ 230V (I'l get 3~ 230V soon)  [sad]

Does anybody know if it's possible (and if so, is it hard/need to change parts) to rewire the machine to run on 230V instead of 400V?

And, can anybody recommend a transformer for 3~230V - 400V that can be used for this purpose thats relativly cheap but ok quality?

I don't know if you can get a inverter that could up from single  to three phase and up the voltage. you may need a single phase motor as the simplest route.

I'll get 3~ 230V in my garage/shop soon, so I only need 230V - 400V. I haven't thought about just changing the motor, but that would absolutely be an option if possible. I'd prefer to be able to run it on 1~230V!

I don't think that rewiring is possible, I'm fairly positive that an inverter or new motor would be you're only option.

I am fairly certain you cant do it by rewiring, you have to replace the motor and rewire.

a new motor maybe cheaper than you think!

Your best bet is to contact Felder, there is a little more to it then just changing motors, there are typically other electronics involved. If you have 3ph 230v available then you can get away with a transformer from 230 to 400. The other method from single phase would be the use of a VFD. The problem with any solution is your getting closer to the cost of the new machine.

The first thing to do is check the nameplate on the motor. If it lists 2 voltages, then the motor can be configured for either one. If it's single voltage, then you're stuck with a transformer.

If you wait until you get 3P 230v than a beefy transformer will suffice. On single phase its a bit more involved, you will need an inverter and a transformer.

Cost wise, could end up expensive

They guy is selling a Hammer bandsaw as well now, and would give me his transformer for free if i bought both. And I think I might do that, but the guy wont answer my questions..! I'm super exited and frustrated at the same time now :P

Quick question - is it hard to take of the tables on this machine, or to get them back on and aligned?

I'm gone go buy it tomorrow, but I'm gone have to get it off the trailer on my own. I'l borrow a pallet jack to get it in to my garage, but geting it off the trailer's what worries me the most. I read that the new and lighter model is almost 300 kg  [huh]

Hi,
I'm new to this forum. I have a Hammer C3 31 from 2005. It has given great service over the years.
I have recently moved house and have a much smaller shop. It would be great to split the combination machine into saw/spindle moulder and a separate Jointer/thicknesser.

Felder do not supply a kit to do this.  Has anyone tried to do this?

I have no direct experience but have read about owners separating machines on the Felder Owners Group forum a few years ago. It can be done and with the groups experience I would suggest posing the question there.

John,

Thanks for the reply. Do you have a link to this forum?
I tried to get into a site that I found on Google and it keeps coming up with an error.
Thanks

When you say you will get 3~ 230v will that be 3~ 230v to neutral or 3~ 230v line to line which would be 3~ 100v to neutral which I think is highly unlikely. I thought that the normal power in Norway is 230v which means that if you get 3 phase power it will be 3~ 400v.

To run the unit on single phase will require a VFD and probably a much larger fuse and wiring than you may already have.

We have three types of power grid in Norway. The most common is isolated terra with 3~ 230V, with no neutral (only PE). So there's three conductors with 230V between each, and therefore no way to get 100V or 400V (even 1~) without a transformer. In new residential areas they have terra neutral with 3~ 400V+N+PE, with 230V between conductor and neutral. After what I've heard the IT grid is old and outdated, and Norway and Albania is the only countries left in Europe that use this system.

I ended up buying the bandsaw (N4400) and a Felder AF 22 dust extractor as well and the transformer for free, but I can't use any of it until I get my wiring done, (and before I do that I have to do an other thing, and an other thing before that and so on). So my motivation to get my tiny shop done is higher then ever before :) I got to try the machines a little when I bought them, and I really think they will be a great addition to my shop!
