Hand Tools Board?

Hi Everyone,
I've been looking at the activity here in the "Other Tools" area, and it's pretty good.  Just wondering, would people like to have a "Hand Tools" board here?  I'll bet we have a lot more to see when it comes to chisels, planes, and more from people here.

What do you think?

Stay in touch,
Matthew

I'm in total agreement ..........when did you say you were putting it up? ;)

Cool ---- I'm on a hand tools kick these days ---- something about the purity of the thing .  I would appreciate such a board.

a hand tool section might be useful

not everybody can afford power tools and in some cases power tools (for instance one off jobs) take longer to set up than doing it by hand

hang ONE door and chisels are quicker for hinge pockets and strike plates than a router

Actually DD --- your post brings up one of the discussions I would like to have on such a board --- hand tools vs power tools -- when, where, and why to use them.  I'm sure this has been discussed ad nauseum elsewhere, but, I would like to hear what people here think.

Everyone,
All right then...I created a "Hand Tools" board.  And I moved current discussions on hand tools into this board.
If you see other discussions that belong here, let me know.
Hopefully, this will help organize more of our discussions, and inspire people to describe their hand tools, and ask questions about them.
Thanks,
Matthew

ok, in an effort to get talking about hand tools (rather than talking about how neat it would be to talk about hand tools) I'll get the ball rolling by throwing in some thoughts about my current and recent collection: I've recently been rewarding myself for all my hard work by upgrading some of my old standbys with what I hoped were going to be superior tools (been on the agenda for years, but got distracted by the Festool slope for a while there)

Chisels, after years of being frustrated by Marples (The common cheap blue set which seem to be the best available from the borg) I finally acquired a better set. I brought a set of Crown chisels (ok, i was influenced by them being sheffield steel - I seem to remember from my youth that all the chisels we were using then were pretty darn good, and by the nice rosewood handles - because i have learned from those wonderfull Festools that professional tools sell the next job at that customers) - I digress (and seem to have succeeded in mentioning Festool several times too) - anyway, I love these things, astonishingly sharp compared to the old marples, beautifully made, and actually about $20 each (not really much more than the marples), hold an edge really well, good purchase
(The Marples seem to develop notches if there is a nail in the same room with them)

Planes: DD started a discussion in another thread which I expressed interest in, namely his apparent delight with Veritas planes, I requested the master pass on more of his wisdom and experience with us, but perhaps DD if you read this here, this would be a good place to respond. (I use a couple of aging but well tuned Stanleys and thought I was happy with them until DD spoiled it for me)

Steve

Good Morning,
Looks like the "Hand Tools" board is working out very nicely so far!  Great responses.
I've always felt, for whatever reason, that something about Festool tools suggest the use of hand tools.  Of course, Festool tools are not hand tools, but maybe it's the ease of use or comfort of using them?  Anyway, that's the idea.

Now this would seem to be the right place for this memo..........

We will be exhibitors and I will be a speaker at the Woodworking in America Conference. We had discussed bringing Festool but in order to preserve the hand tool enviornment the hosts did not want us to demo Festool tools - since we will be demoing everything else and certainly have plenty to do, and not showing being able to some how a tool works in action we decided to leave Festool  home.
It's actually a good decision - having a dedicated environment for hand tools for a few days is a good thing and there are plenty of places to someone to see Festool in action.

Sounds like we are ready to reconsider the lost of art of creativity and unique abilities of craftsman using hand tools.  Adz anyone?

I was thinking about getting one of those tropical birds with the sharp beak and claws.  You know ... a Per-Adz!

Neill

I see....

How I get dragged into these things.

I will have you know that there is none of this stuff allowed.

This being a Adze kickin 'n' kissin free zone. ;D

And Neill, Peradze?

No, more like Malladze.
