Hardwood edge banding and endgrain

Hi,

I am a hobbyist working on remodeling our kitchen. The cabinet boxes are staying but I am redoing all the covers, drawer boxes etc. The covers will be 5/8 MDF with hardwood edges, forbo furniture linoleum on one side and oak veneer on the other side. The plan is the rout the handles into the 2'' hardwood edges (other sides are 1/2'' hardwood edges). The style is similar to the attached image.

Here is my question: The wood grain of the veneer (back of the fronts) is running vertical so do I use endgrain for the hardwood edges on top of the fronts (bottom doesn't matter because you don't see it)? Does anyone do endgrain hardwood edge banding so that it matches with the grain direction of the veneer or is that crazy? It would have to glue some boards together and cut the hardwood edge banding from that to get enough length. Some of the handles will also be routed into the top part of the front.

Thanks!

I have never done it just because narrow strips of endgrain are not stable and will split or swell.  Even if you manage to glue it on without a hiccup the first time something bashes into it it might crack.

Why not get 3/4 oak veneered ply and just do a thin strip edge banding?
