So, I've been trying to match a stain from a piece of pre-finished Asian Walnut/Golden Sierra hardwood flooring.  It's not for a floor but more the look that is trying to be matched for a bathroom remodel.  There's two challenges, one is the grain pattern and the other is the color.  After a bit of research, I've found that Asian Walnut is not walnut at all, so starting with Black Walnut has not been a good foundation.

I've attached a picture of what the goal is.  Would anyone care to make any suggestions on what would to use to get close to the grain pattern?  I've been experimenting with different stains and dyes with oak and walnut trying to match the color but to no avail.

Any help would greatly be appreciated.

Thanks.

Karl

Looks like luan mahogany. Most "Asian" woods are not what you think they are. I had a job spec Asian Mahogany, no such wood.

What is the specific application? Thermo treated poplar looks like a decent match, it is strange stuff. Just worked a whole flitch for table tops.

Its going to vary widely based on the species you are putting it on in the end. If the goal is to match your picture in the original post, use cherry and Old Masters gel stain Red Mahogany as a starting point. Maybe cut with Rich Mahogany and or Early American. It takes some messing around to match like that, but species has to be the given first.

The application is multiple for this bathroom remodel.  I've got a piece I'm putting on a wall about 9 inches wide goring from floor to ceiling.  I've also got a floating vanity that we're custom making that's about 600mm x 1950mm that we're wanting this on the drawer fronts. I'm open to trying a veneer and then staining/dyeing.  I'm looking for suggestions on wood and stain and don't mind trying something new. The grain patterns in the examples posted so far are great, but I'm not sure I caught what kind of wood they were.

Thanks and keep it coming.

Karl -

The pictures i put up are of thermo treated poplar. So its a pretty intense process that was developed in europe as an alternative to chemical treatment (PT) - More common in the states now but still new-ish. The wood is kiln dried, then "cooked" in a stainless kiln with no oxygen past the combustion point. Result is an incredibly stable, water repellent, rot proof wood with a 25 year warranty. Not to mention it makes poplar look amazing - you should see ash and even sweetgum. Caramelized. Seems like a good fit for you in both application and aesthetics? Poplar is obviously soft though.

Let me know and i can put you in touch with the rep.
