Help Deciding on Handsaws — PAX saws any good? Consider other brands?

Hello folks. I’m looking for some help selecting handsaws. I don’t have a precise use for them right now other than breaking down (rough-cut / cross-cutting) miscellaneous hardwoods to manage easier when I need them but I do want a rip and crosscut saw for sure.

The majority of my hand tools are Lie Nielsen and I do already have their dovetail, carcass, tenon saws, but now I need the big ones as well as the others I’m not thinking about. I might have purchased the Lie Nielsen saws but they discontinued them (the story of my life).

Bad Axe saws are wickedly pricey and I don’t know if the juice is worth the squeeze considering the limited amount of time that I’ll use them.

So, on the list right now are the Pax Rip, Crosscut and Crosscut Panel saws such as those featured at:  https://toolsforworkingwood.com/store/item/PZ-HS303.XX

Are these good saws considering the limited use theyll see? Should I be considering any other brands?

Note I am not interested in trying to score antiques like the pre-1928 Disston D8.

A buddy of mine (sparktrician on this forum) suggested that I consider Japanese pull saws — I’d be willing to consider them too.  So please help educate me on options and suggestions?

Finally, I’m planning to get a file kit and setter so I’ll learn how to maintain the saws too. The only kit I’m seeing is Lee Valley’s Bahco line and Highland Woodworking’s Grobet Taper Files for Hand Saw Sharpening. Please let me know if you have any suggestions for a good files kit too.

Many thanks,
Rich

I have vintage hand and panel saws but find modern disposable big box store hand saws are very decent given the price and will last a long time (especially with only occasional use). They are easy to chuck into a car to breakdown stock from the lumberyard too. If you want to try Japanese pull saws check out your local Woodcraft to see which ones are on sale. They usually have a ryobi or a dozuki for half price most days I walk in. Rob Cosman also just came out with a rip and crosscut panel saw.
