Steve,

We're looking for ideas - all ideas.  Ideas will be culled out and the details worked out.  This is Brainstorming FOG style.

Okay, for what it's worth, I'll throw in my two cents (on the assumption that Peter won't just blow me off this time  [poke]  [big grin]  ).

But first, I'd just like to say that I think Festool is very generous to run these contests and offer the prizes it does on this forum.
Thanks, Festool! (Seriously, as a company, you never cease to amaze me.)

And now, my personal opinion:

Contests for great projects and excellent tutorials are always nice... and prizes for such achievements are well deserved.
Certainly there is no reason NOT to have contests for such things.
Yet (again, this is just my own opinion here) such contests might be viewed with even greater good will if there were other kinds of contests, too.

MANY people who own, use and LOVE their Festools are not woodworkers.....

Some of us are tile setters.
Some of us hang drywall.
Some of us are painters.
Some of us work on cars. Or (who, me?) boats.
Some of us refinish floors.
Some of us are roofers.
Some of us are artists.
Some of us are general contractors.
Some of us... well, you get the idea....

ALL of those skills are valuable to organizations like Habitat for Humanity.
And many other charitable institutions that rely on volunteer help.
These organizations - and the people they help - are in a real bind these days.

So...

I just LOVE family's idea about a contest that rewards using our favorite tools to do good in one's community.

And there are SO MANY ways to do just that. I can think of about a million possibilities, and I'm sure others can do the same.
Perhaps we could have a little more time to make these proposals?

Finally, I'd like to suggest an idea of my own.

As I said above, there's no question that contests for great projects and tutorials are nice and well deserved.
However, if the goal is MORE PARTICIPATION, then it might be worthwhile to consider something based on just plain FUN for a change.

Accordingly, I herewith formally resubmit the Six Word Story contest concept...
(and will even be so bold as to suggest that somebody at Festool visit with me about it before dismissing the idea out of hand).
Because it works.
Plus it's a heck of a lot of fun.

And I suspect that there really are a lot of VERY CLEVER members here,
Who are pretty darned entertaining and good with words.
Because Festoolians don't all have to be woodworkers.
And we certainly don't ALWAYS need to be serious. Or at least I HOPE we don't....  [eek]

Bottom line:

I propose we mix things up a bit - doesn't have to be the same thing all the time, does it?

Again, all just my own perspective, of course....
Please take it with a big grain of salt.
No need to make any snap decisions.

Best regards and best wishes for a happy and prosperous new year to all,

Laurie

Hey...good job Hasslefactor (Laurie) well spoken!! I am reading between the lines of some resistance some how with this posting. Maybe I am wrong and hope so. Mixing up the theme should not cause a ruckus and should be acceptable in the good spirit of the forum. If we all were not Festool oriented we would not be part of this forum in the first place. I personally like reading all of the ideas posted. That's the beauty of this forum, good, bad or indifferent, as long as you are not being offensive you are allowed to participate and exchange ideas.

Nah... I'm just messin with you cuz of your comment earlier that the SWS idea probably wouldn't work here... ;-)

I'd like to add my vote for the idea of 'best project made from 1 sheet MDF or ply' or something along those lines. We did something similar at college, and it brought up some really interesting designs. It was called a 'cutlist project' - you have a specified amount of material, and can use nothing else.

Obviously, anything anyone creates would be specific to this project, and would therefore require commitment in terms of time from the participants. This would level the field in terms of professional/hobbyist, as the pro's couldn't submit large projects paid for by others (which someone else mentioned earlier).

The scale of the project would be determined by the cutlist provided. The cutlist would also have to reflect availability (any materials used should be easily available anywhere).

The enthusiasm for this thread is wearing off and the deadline for IDEAS for contests is near.

I will admit that I am surprised by the lack of posters in this thread.  There are 7000 + of you out there.  Those who have posted have had great ideas - I just thought more people would post.

The 20th is just days away.  Maybe your idea will become a contest and you could be in the running to win a prize for you entry in that contest.

Submit your ideas please!

Peter

How about the most innovative way of using a Festool (something other than "normal" usage) along the lines of the use of a router held horizontally to produce sliding dovetails, as has been posted about. The caveat being that it must be within safe working practices. This could include any of the fields of woodworking, be one a site carpenter, shop based joiner or restorer of horse drawn wagons for example.

I also like the idea of the project from one sheet of MDF or Plywood, a similar one could be based on a length of timber say ex 9"x1" x12' (225x25x3600mm), with a view to minimal wastage.

Regards Rob.

my 2 pen'th

most original accessory or extension for use with Festool - I guess the various Domino fences would get my vote (perhaps ones available for sale is a bit too much)
most innovative design for soemthing built with Festool - perhaps a a design / sketch + some pictures

don't know if'll enter - but I use this site to learn techniques and get other people's thought on design's

so even if I didn't win (or enter) - I'd get good value from seeing al the entries

This thread will be locked tomorrow morning - so if you have any more ideas for contests that you would like to see happen here - POST tonight.

Thanks to all who have posted.

What's the point of locking it? If anyone gets a great idea the day after tomorrow he can't post it anymore. Seems odd. Why should there be a deadline?

precision alignment of tools /guides

sure - I am now more accurate than a day of scribing /cutting in...

but I can still find daylight over 1/2 m / yd

... best { quickest / simplest / most repeatable /most accurate } techniques

didn't specify toolset... sometimes I get as much from the ideas as the specifics

Alex,

The moderators were asked for ideas for contests.  It was decided that it would be a good idea to ask the membership for ideas.  As the originator of this thread I originally felt that setting a deadline for ideas would motivate members to post their ideas in a short period of time so that the suggestions could be considered in a timely manner.

Any member can start another thread regarding contests at any time.  I just won't be a desperate moderator.  [big grin]
