Help me understand difference in 150mm Hard Pads

I'm very confused. There are three different 150mm hard pads available from Festool.

498988, 496149, and 496150

Could someone tell me what the difference is between the three?  Are they interchangeable, or dedicated to specific sanders?

I own both ETS 150/3 and RO 150.  Do I need a separate pad for each?

Dazed and confused, [unsure]

Rotex take fast fix pads ... the ETS takes pads with an M8 bolt connector.

They're different!

There's also the issue with the "new, new" Jetstream pads coming out on the latest ETS variants, so I'm not sure about the different versions and what's currently available over your side of the big pond.

Anyway, the 496149 is ROTEX, the others are ETS compatible. Be careful - I check some of the ETS150 brochures online at Festool Oz and the pad codes are really out of date!

498988 is the current pad for the ETS 150/3, ETS 150/5, and old Rotex 150 - it is a Fusion-Tec® Multi-Jetstream pad
496149 is the current pad for the current Rotex 150 - it is a FastFix® Multi-Jetstream pad
496150 is the old pad for the ETS 150/3, ETS 150/5, and old Rotex 150 - it is a Multi-Jetstream pad

Prior to the Multi-Jetstream pads, the 150mm diameter pads only had 9 holes and were called Jetstream pads.

Thanks,

For anyone who reads this in the future, the abrasives search on our website has a list of compatible pads at the bottom of the page after you select your sander.  [wink]

Do the shown pads include the pad which the sander comes with or additional pads available in addition to the original?

That list shows all the pads, including the one the sander comes with.

All Festool sanders come standard with the SOFT pad. Which is the middle of 3 choices. Besides the soft pad there's the even softer SUPER SOFT pad and the harder HARD pad.

For some sanders there's only 1 or 2 choices for pad.

And for the Rotex sanders there's also a special polishing pad.

Based on that it would appear that the ETS 125 does not have a hard pad. Am I correct?

Correct!

Out of curiosity, why a hard pad for a finish sander?

It makes sense for the Rotex, sure, but for an ETS...?

The hard pad does not make it a rough sander all of a sudden. The hard pad also assures that you stay absolutely flat and prevents round-overs. This is very usefull when you work on stock that is smaller than the pad.

Furthermore, the ETS 150 can be used for some rougher work if you put lower grit paper on it like 60 or 40. I have used the ETS 150/3 with the hard pad for paint removal and it works just fine.

And last but not least, the ETS 150 shares the same pad with the older Rotex 150 E. So the pad is there anyway and you can use it for the ETS 150 if you like to.

ok, that's probably the biggest piece that was missing in my thinking...  thank you!

Yes, that much I kind of figured.

What Alex said about the hard pad. Plus it helps when leveling a finish with multiple coats of poly, lacquer, etc. It passes over more of the tiny low spots and lets them gat filled in.  the extra rigidity allows a little more vac suction if needed too.

Sounds like, if the primary purpose of the sander is for finishing bare wood on furniture and cabinets the ETS 125 and 150/3 would be good choices (the 150/3 with a hard pad for larger flat surfaces). I generally don't do much else except prepping bare wood surfaces for finishing and I would think with cabinets/face frames, the 150/3 would be a good choice based on the feedback. If was doing a large table top I suppose there would be another model that would work best, but that is something I have rarely done. I'm sure I'll get a 100 different answers, but . . .
