High gloss paint (FPE) orange peel

Hey all,

I am working on a DIY Fine Paints of Europe high gloss application and got the worst orange peel. I pre-sanded the surface using a Festool ETS 150, and applied the primer which looked great.Then sanded the primer, and applied the first coat of paint-which was a disaster. Orange peel everywhere! Anyone have any ideas to remove the orange peel, I need to use a handheld polisher or sander (no compressor) that emits low sound since I plan on doing the work at night and do not want to wake up neighbors.

A low power sander/polisher suffices too as I can work on it for weeks I have no deadline.

Is it small enough to hand sand or is it a large project?  You might be better off hand sanding if the finish hasn’t completely cured. And I think festool and Mirka still sell hand sanding blocks that can connect to an extractor. Very worthwhile to keep on hand even if you mostly use powered sanders.

Yea its too large to hand sand. I hand sanded about 14 hours worth but still too much orange peel and not much progress. The room is about 350 sq foot room. I'll look into the sanding block thanks!

I wouldn't dream of sanding at night. There are no power tools that are so quiet you won't wake up the neighbours.

Want to do it at night, here, the proper tool, good luck.

How did you apply the paint?

How long has it been coalescing?

I’d wait a couple days, see if the surface tightens up.

Wet sand with 400 wet or dry, may be what needs to be done in your circumstance. (I’d be power sanding).

I applied the paint with a high density foam roller, and brushed back. Its def. cured I started the project a year ago and needed to put it on hold. Trying to finally finish it! Even when I used some power sanding, the power was taking off too much paint. Do you know of any light powered hand sanders I can use for wet sanding (without electrocution)?

Wet sanding is best done by hand. The water makes the process go quickly. Keep the surface wet.

For power, it would have to be air.
