Hl850 with benchtop uses?????

I hit the lotto this morning. I drove to New York expecting to show up and the ad be incorrect. This person didn't even know what the tool was and was selling the HL850 planer with SEHL benchtop for $100. I get there and he pulls out a Bosch Flush cut saw with a miter attachment and 19 blades still in the package and a porter cable pocket hole machine. Both in like new condition and with carry case. Very nice but not what I drove there for. He then finally brings out the planer and benchtop and its brand spanking new. There wasn't a scratch on it and clearly had been purchased recently. I test everything and he tells me he needs is out today and $130 takes it all. I jumped on it and brought everything to the car and I ask him if he by any chance had the systainer for the planer and he says oh yeah I have it with the round thing and went back upstairs and came down with the systainer which he just threw in my back seat. When I got home and grabbed the systainer it was pretty heavy but didn't think twice of it. When I got to my garage and started opening everything I opened the sys. and the round thing was a brand new OF1400 complete with manual and the systainer was for the router....JACKPOT.

ANYWAYS what can I do with the planer and benchtop. Most importantly can I use the planer and bench as a jointer and how?

Can you say "accessory after the fact"?  As already pointed out by Birdhunter, I would make a public and well documented attempt to determine if these tools are "hot".  I mean the type documentation I could hand a New York City detective, should he come knocking on my door.  Even if you never get that knock, if you should ever try and sell these tools (as with anything labeled with a serial number), you want to be sure they were not stolen.  Just look to the art world, and stories of stolen art surfacing 80 years later at auction.  The "well my Grandfather left them to me" defense simply does not hold water, even after multiple changes in private ownership.

I wouldnt say hit the lottery, you probably bought stolen tools.  There's no way he purchased the tools and would be willing to sell them that cheap. Remember you pay for what you get.

The deal you got does sound too good to be true. The onle reason I can see Festool tools selling for that low a price, especially ifcthey're close to new condition, is if the seller has no clue what the tools are and ehat they would normally sell for.

If some relative, father, uncle, family friend, died and left the tools, I can see someone selling them at a low cost, if they didn't fo research, and needed to raise money quickly for funeral costs or other expenses, or just to quickly settle an estate with multiple claimsnts.

I've also heard of pissed of spouses, partners, roomates etc. trying to quickly sell of someones property the pissed off person was in possesion of to screw over the other person or raise cash quickly to settle a supposed debt. This would likely be illegal if the person ehise property it is has documentarion, and might be considered theft in many areas, and you might be considered in possesion of stolen goods. In this case you would be better off checking with local Festool dealers, and/or the police in the areas around where you purchased the tools, to determine if any tools matching the description have been stolen. If you don't want to do it personally than register for an email address for the purpose, or rent a mailbox, or buy a drop phone and some minutes.

Then there's the possibility the tools were simply stole, either out of someones truck or shop, or the when the owner was away. In this case there eould be no doubt the tools were stolen, and keeping them would be a bad idea and almost certainly illegal and you would pretty much have to return them.

What you paid for the tools is probably a tenth of there value. If you make a reasonable effort to determine if the tools were stolen, and nobody comes forward, then after a certain amount of time the tools would likely be considered yours, free and clear, although the specifics will vary by laws in different locations. Just keep records of your reasonable efforts to find out if the tools were stolen.

Nobody likes to pay to get stolen property back, but if the tools are stolen what you paid may be less than insurance deductible, and definately less than the replacement cost, so hopefully the owner would be willing to cover your loses.

In the mean time you might want to redpectfully use the tools for something if your not already familiar with Festool quality. Worse come to worse you may have paid to rent some tools that may not normally be available to rent without ponying up the normal full retail price.

Turns out he walked in and bought all the tools he could afford without knowing how to use them but now can't make ends meet and has a bunch of stuff he needs to turn into fast cash to pay his mortgage and cc bills. I honestly feel like crap asking and kinda wish he was a theif because hearing the truth hurts like hell. We sit here like a bunch of pompous assholes complaining that our $1000 tool doesn't stroke me like the ad says. I grew up eating welfare cheese and drinking sugar water but today I realized I have possibly turned into the asshole I couldn't stand in my 20's and early 30's. I drive a $87,000 truck into the ghetto dressed in bummy clothes, echo jeans, Perry Ellis shirt, a $7,000 omega watch and Versace sunglasses in the damn rain. I then allow my peers to influence me that what I thought was an amazing sale was in fact theft and I called asking questions like a damn cop. I'm so pissed off at myself that I am going back and paying this guy a resonable number. I don't personally know any of you but we all buy festool because we CAN. The tools are nice but I am amazing with my hands and can do the same with a ryobi as I can with a festool and have made every nickle with cheap tools not with one festool. I have 28 employees and run job after job with a huge assortment of tools of which not a single one is blue and green and after today I think I will stick with Latin King colors or blue and black because I don't have to lower myself to be in the I'm rich as fuck club and can mingle with the ones who make us rich. Hey, it was your story, not ours (emphasis on story).  What does not add up is your line about his needing the money for mortgage and CC bills, quickly.  He could have walked into any pawn shop (New York has plenty of those), and with receipts, and a valid I.D., could have gotten much more than the $130.00 you paid, in an instant, and in cash. 

Please don't include me in your definition of "peer".  Peer is defined as; a person who is equal to another in abilities, qualifications, age, background, and social status.    I for one do not drive an $87,000.00 truck, wear a $7,000.00 watch or "wear Versace sunglasses in the darn rain".  So, as you can see, we would never be considered "Peers".

Rather than see another thread go down the tubes, what seems to be a more pressing question is how we can, and should, protect ourselves when purchasing pre-owned Festool items.

Awhile back, there was mention of having either a Festool site, or one here on the FOG, where a person can quickly check to see if a tool they are about to purchase was stolen. Any status update on this idea?  How 'bout we head down this path instead?

Having something like this when you're standing in someone's driveway or parking lot, where you can enter the serial number into your phone for peace of mind. Certainly not fool-proof, but could be very valuable.

I'm sorry if I came off as a prick. I had a few drinks tonight and I don't drink but the purchase of my house was more than reason to celebrate. In all honesty I didn't even think of them being stolen and I hope that demonstrates to you guys where I am morally in life. I truly see the best in everyone and I do not judge EVER because you never know a persons motivation. Three years ago I purchased 4 dump trucks a trailer and a bobcat for $90,000 cash. They were all fairly new and each truck was equipped with an aftermarket heavy duty axle and aluminum dump body. I sold each truck for $50,000 +\- a few bux just to move them but I could have gotten between $65-75,000. Cat and trailer I gave away for $10,000. I more than doubled my money and all I did was post it on CL. I sold them all within a few weeks and he could have done the same but he didn't. The trucks weren't stolen and the deal was legitimate. Asking me why he didn't go to a pawn shop is like asking me why that guy sold me his trucks. I simply don't know. I went there with the intention of buying the planer and bench for $100 which is how he posted it online. What motivated him to sell it all to me for peanuts is questionable but after talking to him very understandable. The money was readily available and he grabbed it. If he would have been a shady guy I have possibly thought it but he was clean cut, well spoken and asked me for work when he found out what I did for a living. You really never know what a person is going through which reminds me that On my way! home as I got on the cross Bronx expressway I saw a girl possibly in her mid 30's holding a sign that said homeless and willing to do any work for a day's pay. I remembered her because she was wearing short shorts with her ass hanging out, a tight top and she was actually attractive. It really makes you wonder. For the guy who said we are far from peers, I was never insinuating that we are financial equals. I don't know who you are or what you make but we do share common interests and we are both willing to pay more for what we believe is the best product. In my eyes that makes us peers and like I said from the door. I feel like I am a peer with the rich to the poor. I have 28 families that rely on me making money. At the end of the day I hang out with the guys and buy them lunch and snacks when I visit the sites. I am very easy to get along with n take care of them. I expect a lot from them and during work hours its all business But after work they are my peers

To answer the question in the opening post, the stand is intended to convert the planer into a jointer.  A small jointer.  There are numerous threads here as well of many youtube videos out there.

Regarding the rest of the stuff in this thread, I admit that when I first read about the purchase price I instantly thought what others did - that there was something not right.  And in these instances the first not-right thought tends to be stolen goods.  I am glad that turned out not to be the case here. 

Hope that the OP gets a chance to use the tools in good health for years to come.
