Hose Size Questions

Hi-

I am going to get a longer hose for my ct33, to help with clean-up.

I am currently using the 1" hose on the boom-arm (which only gives me about a five foot radius).

My questions are:

Should I go ahead and get a larger diameter hose?  I am thinking yes, but not sure if it will actually make a difference given the pole.

If so, is the 2" one overkill?

Would the non-antistatic hose be sufficient for cleanup?

I will also use this hose for wet pickup (but with my fein vac, don't want to muck up the ct33!)

Thanks,

-jamie

The 50mm hose will not directly connect to either Festools or cleaning tools. It is designed to be used with a coupling to extend smaller hoses.

The 36mm hose is intended for use with cleaning tools, although often the smaller 27mm hose is good enough for cleaning.

Personally I use a 36mm x 5m AS hose on my boom arm because I use the boom arm for routing and sawing. Probably the shorter 3.5m 27mm hose will work okay with the TS55, but I believe the 36mm works better, especially when 5m long. The smaller routers, MKF700 and OF1010, work swell with the 27mm AS hose, even 5m long, but the OF1400 and OF2200 work best with a 36mm AS hose.

There are cleaning kits which include the 36mm AS hose. My experience is that although the AS hose is not as flexible as the non-AS hose, the AS is more versatile. I live and work in Southern California where the humidity usually is low enough static is an issue. FOG members in more humid climates often find the non-AS hoses work swell.

From CT33 to base of boom I have the short section of 50mm hose
From 50mm up along boom and to just short of tool I use the 36 mm.
At end of 36mm, i have made up about 18" section of 27mm hose.
That setup seems to work fine for all but my 850 planer.  That gets direct to the 36mm hose if i am doing rough planing
If just taking off about 1mm or less per cut, I keep the little 18 inch section at end of the 36mm hose to planer.

You can get end fittings to make up your own short hose.
I have an extra 5m length of 27 mm hose that I have cut up into shorter sections that I use in situations where I want to extend my hose or to go with a shorter hose length.  It just depends on the situation.

Yes, I would definitely get a larger-diameter hose, as it is less likely to clog with debris.

The Boom Arm shouldn't matter, but, since you are looking for more reach, you will either want a longer hose or just plug the hose directly into the vac without hanging from the Boom Arm.  While your D27 hose is easily installed and removed within your Boom Arm's hose brackets, the larger D36 is a much tighter fit and may require you to loosen the screws on each bracket to install and remove -- a real pain.  And the D50 is simply too large to fit within those brackets.  But, you can always leave your current hose in place and strap a larger hose to the Boom Arm with velcro ties, or wrap large rubber bands around the hose hooking onto the cord hooks on either side of the brackets.

The largest D50 hose isn't really overkill, but the larger the hose, the less flexible it becomes.  And, from what I understand, the non-antistatic hoses are more flexible than a comparable green antistatic version.  Despite what has been stated in a post above, the D50 hose can and will work with the Festool vacuum accessories.  First off, Festool offers both D36 and D50 accessories.  The larger D50 series accessories are only for use with the D50 hose.  But, the D36 series accessories can be used with any of the three sizes of hoses that Festool offers -- the D27 tool-end fitting fits into the D36 accessories, the D36 tool-end fitting fits over these accessories and the D50 hose requires the Hose Reducer that will fit into the D36 accessories.  So, you can choose either of the larger hoses and still use your cleaning tools.

While I do recommend one stick with the antistatic hoses for tool use, a non-antistatic hose is perfectly acceptable for cleanup.  I don't own a Fein, but the Festool vacs will also accept off-brand hoses that are the standard ShopVac size (2-1/4").  For messy wet pickup, I would suggest getting a cheap aftermarket hose that will fit your Fein and not spoil/soil a more expensive Festool hose...
