How about a FOG YouTube channel?

Ok, I was just thinking, Shane Holland just posted this video about the Trion on the official FestoolUSA channel. In the past, people here expressed the opinion that they would like to see videos about the tools, explaining all kinds of stuff. Obviously, this would take a lot of effort and money to make all these videos at a professional quality at one source.

Now I thought to myself, why not put the knowledge of this FOG community at work? I mean, if there was a YouTube channel for the FOG, then we could all contribute to it as individual users, make our own (small) videos and upload them there for generations of people to see (well, generations ......  :. I mean, we've seen Craig post some videos on his personal channel about using his router, and Brice on his website, and I'm sure some others here also done something like that so now and then ..... wouldn't it be great if that could all be combined into one source? Your one stop address for all you want and need to know about Festools? I sure wouldn't mind shooting some vids about the tools I got, explaining some it's features.

Over time this could grown into a very large archive of knowledge and tutorials.

Now I know this couldn't be a channel where everybody had administrative access to. That's simply not possible. There would be a need to somehow upload this to a central server somewhere, under control of FOG or Festool admins, who in turn would post the vids on the YouTube channel.
 
I'm just throwing an idea out there, please tell us what you think.

i think its a great idea alex and it would also be a great way for festool to show their products to more people.
this is definitely the way forward and the way future markets can be taken advantage of.

it would also be fantastic to see mini classes such as festool holds now at their head quarters.

surely they could set a video camera up while the classes are being held.
then we can all see what is happening and how to use the full potential of their wonderful tools.

I believe the former administrator made a Youtube channel for the community but sadly the idea never took off. I think it's a great idea so let's see if we can get it off the ground. Anyone have ideas for the most useful videos to get started?

I agree that videos can show some things better than words and still photos.

I haven't examined what is involved in setting up a channel - not that I could without Festool's permission, but in the meantime you happen to have a person here - not me - who is the master of lists, the historian of all things Festool, the epitome of web investigations who you could ask politely.  You know who it is.

In the meantime - why doesn't someone start a thread and go and collect you tube urls and embed them in posts?

It's not hard to do.

Well, sorry it took so long, but here's what I did.

On YouTube, I set up a "group" which provides the very functionality that was requested here.  It allows other YouTubers to contribute videos to a group channel.  The videos will need to be approved before they are published to the channel.  The group channel can be accessed using the URLs below.  To add a video, simply click the "Submit a Video" button in the upper right corner of the page.  Feel free to let me know if you have any questions.

I look forward to seeing everyone's videos in a single location.  I think this will go far to consolidate all of the video content in a central location making it easy for everyone to access.  Also, a big thank you to members, such as Craig, who have spent time creating and posting videos for the benefit of the members.

Frank, get a Flip Video. They are easy to use and have software that uploads to YouTube for you.  The quality is actually quite good too.  I got my dad a Flip HD for Christmas and the video was very good.  I was impressed.  Low light conditions it didn't fair too well, but otherwise very good.  I think we would all enjoy seeing some video from you.  I know I enjoy your photos and writeups for your projects.

Now I gotta get me a YouTube account, but they're giving me troubles because I don't have a cell phone to complete the registration. Grrrrrrr! That's the first time a website asks me to buy some hardware before I can get an account. Unbelievable.  [mad]

I agree the Flip is great  [thumbs up] [thumbs up]  so easy to use.  The HD one is about $200 in the states that would be $7,846,999.00  [wink] up there but still a good buy.

EDIT/UPDATE: i just added about 10 video's from my account.

1. open 2 windows the first http://www.festool.tv  the second your own channel.
2 select one of your videos and right click the title and select "copy link location"
3 switch window to the open Festool channel and select "submit a video" and click paste.

How many of you have a video camera and would be interested in a contest on the forum for creating videos?

As you know, Forrest and Peter have been working hard to help me with creating ideas for contest for the year.  I would like very much to see more end user generated video but I'm afraid that few people have the equipment to do it.

I bought a Sony for my wife 2 Xmas's ago.  She wanted one.  [big grin] [big grin] Got big points, but I use it - not to its capabilities for anyone who has seen my videos. [scared]

I may not be able to participate in such a contest - but I could, and would, if possible.  I might also be able to help others to some degree.

But before you actually do a contest like that, it might be helpful to have people post tutorial threads and be available to answer questions.  Maybe someone can get Mark The WoodWhisperer to come give some hints prior?

Shane, I think such a contest is a good idea even though I don't (yet?) have a video camera.  Even if I did have one, I work so slowly, that it might not be possib;le for me to shoot a suitable woodworking video.

Frank and Forrest, some digital still cameras will shoot short video clips. With a little editing you've got a video in no time. Plus, video cameras are so common I bet you could borrow one from a friend for a few days with no trouble.

Peter, I like the idea of getting some simple video tutorials together to help members out.

Well, this sounds like a fun idea, I hope we can get this together.

To be honest, Brice, before the topic presented itself last night this wasn't even a consideration for a contest.  I personally think that members would be best served by how-tos, tips and tool reviews in a video format.  And, in my experience, I would say that folks are far more interested in the content than the quality of the video, the editing, the titling, and other bells and whistles.  People just want to consume information that's educational and answers questions, no matter how unrefined.

I'll give this some additional thought.  Unless we have a fair number of members who have the capability to record video, it wouldn't make for a good contest in my opinion.  On the other hand, I think it's a great opportunity for us as members of the forum to share our knowledge in a way that transcends the various skill levels, cultures and language barriers that exist here.

I would like to continue to get some feedback on this idea.  Thanks for everyone's enthusiasm.

But in all seriousness, lots of people have cameras these days. If it isn't a real dedicated video camera, then it's a still photography camera that can shoot videos (like mine, pretty decent), or cell phone cameras.

I think that my still camera (a Nikon D40X) but (assuming that it does) I considered it to be a frill that I never used (much like the never used Cruise Control on my car).

It's possible that I might change my mind about the video -but I will never change my mind about the cruise control.
