I'm building a clamp rack design that I found on lumberjocks and for the main structure I'm trying to just use dominos. So far so good but I've hit a snag trying to connect the sides to the base.

This is all 3/4" plywood the base is 24" square with a 3/4" rabbit on two sides that are about 3/8" deep. I was planning to use 6x40mm dominos but as I was setting up I noticed the bit would only be able to go about 3/4 of the way into the two pieces. Is there another long bit I can order from Festool or a 3rd party that will make a complete 40mm deep pocket?

Yea. I was going to... I just wanted to try and get the full length of the domino for joint strength. I think I might just mark all of the joints and route each domino hole twice like a normal joint, once on the side and once on the base. It would just be so easy to punch through both at once with a longer bit and just hammer it into place, while it is already aligned.

Here are some of the photos so far.

I will post a project page on lumberjocks with pics and specs once it is all done.

I just had a thought. I could use a pattern bit with a bearing to go in after making the initial holes with the domino and get the extra depth I need.

thoughts?

Drill deeper with a 6 mm drill bit.

Mark the side piece mortices center, disassemble replunge side.

So you are going through a  3/4" plywood face into the edge of 3/4" plywood at the location of the rabbet? So really through 3/8" plywood face?  I think I would just cut then shorter rather than messing around making the mortise deeper.  If the above is correct you will have about 20mm of the domino into the edge  of the 3/4" plywood.

If I am gathering correctly from the pictures .........  the sides are standing on the bottom? With the dominos going in vertically? I don't think you will really gain much by getting them all the way into the vertical side piece.

Thanks! I wish I had just dominoed and cut the excess off. As it is I used screws and too many IMHO.

The stand is very sturdy though and I think the dominos holding the sides together instead of pocket screws give it a lot more rigidity.

I'm still organizing my clamps on the rack. Should have it done so I can post a final picture later this week.
