How do you install drawer slides?

I'm building some plywood side/back drawers and have Accuride 3832SC slides for them.

What I'm wondering is that do you usually recess the slides into the drawer side in a rabbet of sorts or do you leave the extra 12.7mm of space on each side of the drawer and the cabinet wall, just screw the slides to the cabinet wall and drawer side quick and dirty and cover the gap up front with the drawer front?

I was originally planning on doing domino drawers with recessed slides, but then started counting how thick material I need for the sides to still have something to screw into (I'm guessing about 21mm) and began wondering would it be better to just make the drawer body entirely out of 12mm ply and screw the slides directly to the side without any recessing.

My original idea:

Second version:

I do it the second way as well when I'm forced to use those slides. I detest side mounted slides!

If the material is thick enough i would choose to recess the sliders. I like the cleaner look.
In case of thinner material i would probably use sliders that mount to the underside of the drawers

I do the second way, but prefer wooden glides when I can do it.  If I have to use slides, I really like the under-mount blum full extension glides that disappear!

To go to the inset slides in the sides as you outlined in your first option, you have to go deeper with the drawer stock.  I think going that think makes the drawer look to heavy personally.
