Last job with my 12in Hitachi scms...

Looking for a 10 in scms with decent capacity and light...

Sick of carrying a behemoth

The KAPEX is pretty easy to carry. It weighs ~47 lbs. It has hand holds on each side of the base and one on the back, where the cord winds up.

When I carry it, I lock it in place with the head to the right, face it like I was cutting, grab the right side of the base with my right hand and behind the pivot with my left hand. It's a pretty comfortable position.

I think it is pretty safe to say the Kapex is the easiest 10 inch slider to carry, not just because it weighs less than most but because you can carry it closer to your body.

That was the first thing I tried out when I tested the Kapex a couple of years back. Yes its very comfortable to carry unlike my Makita ls1013 which is what I went for in the end [laughing] good saw but very heavy and awkward to carry.

Ryan- Trust me, it is the easiest sliding saw I have ever lugged around.

I may carry it a bit different then the rest of the guys, I use my right hand on the part where the cord wrap is, left hand on the base handle.

I move mine from room to room and around the outside of a house where ever I am working.

I would much rather carry the saw around vs. walking 2 miles a day back and forth to the saw.

It is very compact and easy to move in and out of small door ways and such.

I think it's compact size and light weight may be my favorite part about the saw.

That's weird, according to the specifications the ls 1013 and the kapex weigh exactly the same (21.5 kg) (at least the old ls1013 I have does; the one without laser and worklight, but with the top parts of the fence). (the makita indeed is a bit more awkward to carry)

I used to carry the makita by the table extension bars, untill I noticed they weren't up to the task, and bend up a little; later I removed those bars and used the recesses underneath the table that were meant for it. The makita also has a handle on top I used a few times to carry it with one hand up a ladder. (not recommendable, but it worked ;) )

I carry the kapex most of the time like it was shown in some video of it, standing behind the saw, right hand in the recess of the cable storage thing, left hand under recess underneath the  table. If I carry it from the front off the saw, the miterscale sometimes grabs my workclothes, and it feels like it could damage it.

What about in a job where you are remodeling a single room with the family living in the house?  Do you think it would be practical to place the Kapex in that room?  How would you set it up in such a case?  On the floor, on horses or what?  I wouldn't dream of that with my current saw.  In my situation that capability would make the ROI for the extra $600 look pretty good.

You get a little blow by but not much. I wouldn't be scared to use a KAPEX in an occupied space if it had a CT 22 or CT 33 with a 36mm nose.

one of the deciding factors for me was the weight.  at 55 years old and not a helper some days, it made sense  as you I also got tired of carring the bosch beast that I had, and the makitas, which were not that bad.... but at 47# kapex is the way to go !

Final decision:  Buy!

I have done that! With my CT22 no problem.Just a little dust behind the saw but not much.I use the 36mm hose.

If I am adding trim to a room, such as crown, wainscoting, base or what ever, I do set up right in the room with my saw and 22.

I either use the saw on the floor with two sys 1's for support or use my mft and my vac for support when I use the kapex on its mft.

I usually toss a drop cloth down and then just roll it up when I am done.  Almost no extra vacuuming needed.

Thanks guys. It's pretty much decided then.

After the next contract I sign, I'm going to buy the kapex. I might try and go down to washington and see ho wmuch they ding me for it at the border as opposed to paying $1700 here...

Then I gotta decide on the stand. I want something with continuous support on both sides, but still portable...

I guess something like this one:

I'm often cutting 12-16' lengths of material and extending arms just don't cut it, and it's a pain adjusting them everytime I want to cut something shorter.

Cheers!

You have made your choice but I thought I would still add my thought!

What every said above is right!!!!!!!    Its defently the easiest saw to carry available.  I dont mind carrying the Kapex!  I hate carrying my mates  DEWALT so heavy and your worried you will knock the door as you try and work your way through the opening.  The Makita is also abit heavy to carry really but Dewalt the worst of them all. I think the new Milwaukee looks really big and heavy to carry aswell.

For the stand I would still suggest the Dewalt 7023. A lot of guys use it with the Kapex, it is sturdy and easy to fold down and transport.

If you dont like the colour paint it! [big grin]

No more extending arms for me.

If you dont like dewalts something of the same type of stand. BUT I must admit the Dewalt isnt a bad stand BUT the arms do bend down when fully extended and you have a little bit of weight.  I definitely definitely wouldnt get the Kapex SET stand its the worst possible stand! It sits in my garage for spiders to build spiderwebs.  The UG-Kapex stand is umm alot better than the old festool setup but it still isnt as convenient as the dewalt stand on really bad ground but it is a better setup then the dewalt the arms dont flex  and you have a stops on  them. If your a heavy site user I would go dewalt other wise UG kapex

I have the Dewalt miter saw stand and I screwed together two pieces of plywood perpindicular to one another.  The base is about 7 inches and the fence part is about two inches.  You can make the fence part taller, but I also use the support to hold my 9 ft guide rail when I'm on the move.  Anyway I clamp it to the side of the kapex and rest it on the extension arm.  It works great for repetitive cuts as I have a lot in building cabinets.  I'm going to try to get some pictures to show you guys.  It's grea,t it's a double use continuous extension and guide rail storing device.  I only use one on the left side of my kapex but I could make another when needed.
